Question about 4 stroke 125s

Howdy, i'm 17 in a few months and looking out for my next bike. I was advised towards the yamaha DT because i like that style of bike, and a lot of people on here say it's very good.
Anyway, i've noticed that yamaha does a "XT" model, which appears to be similar to the DT but it has a 4 stroke engine. My question is, how will the perfomance of these two bikes compare? When derestricted will the 4 stroke be much slower? I've seen threads about the pros and cons of 4 strokes and 2 strokes, and just wanted to ask how these two bikes pan out against each other.

The points i'm trying to compare are,

- Fuel cost efficiency
- Maximum Speed
- Acceleration
- Durability, how many miles before it breaks down
- Sound of the engine ^_^

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

you cannot derestrict the 4 stroke, so it'll top out about 65-70, whereas the dt will top out about 85-90

Alistair is right on the money about derestriction, which gives you the option of a useful bike after you pass your test if you can't afford anything bigger. The XT will be OK but you may fall asleep riding it , in other words it WILL be slow. Top speed between the two in stock trim will be similar, but the DT will accelarate quicker and have more urgency about it. Reliability there isn't much to choose, the DT might be a 2 stroke but it's an ageing and well proven design that if given a little maintenance and reasonable oil will go forever.

The 4 stroke would be slightly better, also you wouldn't need 2 stroke oil to top up as well

- Maximum Speed

Restricted I'd presume they're the same around 60-65mph, derestricting the 2 stroke could be good for another 15-20mph.

- Acceleration

Like the top speed, about equal restricted, derestricted the stroker should pull away easily.

- Durability, how many miles before it breaks down

How good are you at maintaining bike? Neither would break down if both are in good condition and you're adept at reading the odd Haynes manual. The 4 stroke should require less work though.

- Sound of the engine ^_^

4 stroke will be like a Brrrrrrrr lawnmower, compaired to a Mmmeeeeee of a grass-strimmer.

DT engine maintenance should be nothing more then the occasional spark plug, balancing the oil pump and changing the gearbox oil / coolant once in a while. They don't need frequent rebuilds in stock form, all old tech, steel liners etc so a million times tougher then an Aprilia RS etc.....

I have a 2 stroke at the moment and i spend a lot of time maintaining it. I'll probably go for the 2 stroke DT based on the posts, seems like the better option overall.

I have yet to ride a good 4 stroke 125.. and ive tried 3.

i have a dt mate, they are sweet prone to rust a bit in places but you wont regrent it most fun you can have with your clothes on! (and mabye getting em off as well if you pull a bird that likes leather!)
