oh am i happy bunny or what, being a relative newbie at this biking lark (passed DAS in april this year) ive always been a bit nervous of filtering, but tonight oh tonight.... north M25 where the 40mph average speed limit is the traffic just stopped, after sitting there for about thirty seconds i thought i'll just get past the one in front and the one in front of him.... all was going great until i ended up in the slip lane for the A10 no problemo thought i, i can nip up the slip road around the roundabout and back down the other side (sort of extreme filtering) so up the exit slip i go... round the roundabout and oh bugger it the entry to the motorway is shut, back round the roundabout and home via the A10 instead, no hold ups there though.
i think im getting more confident, sitting at 70 on my trusty 250 superdream and there were some sections when my knuckles werent white.
Very Happy

Just be carefull and look out for gaps where the car drivers can pull over.

I know i'm sad, but if i'm on the motorway and I know its filter time (ie first thing), I wear a bib.

But lights on full is a must.

I remember recently the M62 there'd been a serious accident, anyway it took colleagues 4 or 5 hours to do the 70 miles from Liverpool, it took me an hour and 20.

Funny thing was I was still annoyed it took me 20 mins more than normal and it was sort of annoying filtering, I wasn't enjoying it.

I sort of filter too much to be honest, sort of imbetween cars at lights, when there's no space to the right.

Are you not supposed to filter in between cars at the lights? Oops! Me, if there's a gap, I'm 'avin' it!

I do look at the drivers and you can see and sometimes just sense if they are about to change lanes (well so far so good). Normally though, if there's a car next to them, they ain't going to try and fill a space that isn't there.

I've been filtering down the outside before past a long queue to a roundabout keeping just to the left of the white line and some arse wipe in a BMW decided he didn't want me overtaking him so pulled out and put me in the path of a lorry. It felt like the extra long sticky out bit of the divvy center stand made a nice job on his front bumper as I squeezed in the space. Bit of an underpants filling moment though I must say.

I like the motorway filtering. I read it here, then found it to be true, that at a certain speed, like about 70-80, the cars seem to sit in such a way that there is a space to weave through, thus as you overtake the car on its left, you have somewhere to go if he decides to change lanes.

Keep up the filtering, it's one reason for riding a bike, but remember you don't exist if they want to change lanes.

Good on you, just take it easy until recognising the danger signs becomes 2nd nature.

yeah the above answer's from others be extra vigilante of people throwing thing's out of car windows and keep your bike to a safe speed depending on the situation you are in and the space available to you.when I filter it is like moses crossing the red sea car's pull over when they can some do not (maybe it is my 2 stroke screaming sound from my nsr125?? )but what ever it is they see me and try and leave a gap @times though filtering isnt going to happen and you have to just sit there in traffic like on 2 lane town centre roads where there is JUST! enough room for the two cars never mind a filter gap........

I tend to avoid filtering where there is a gap in either lane.

It means that a car can nicely move into the gap when you are there... Rolling Eyes .

I tend to stick to going between cars which are almost parallel, and hanging back (but still filtering) when there are big gaps.

TBH you are supposed to move into the gaps anyway, but I guess that doesn't stop a car driver from side swiping you.

I tend to filter at a nice slow pace so when the 'I'm not looking in my mirrors' bmw driver decides he's gona have a go at getting in the horizontal position I'm ready for him.

One trick I do use is, (an I know it's a bit naughty) but I sometimes pop my high beam on, it makes such a difference as I assume it flashes in their mirror. Other one i do is if there is oncoming traffic coming up sit a bit wider over in their lane, then when they arrive pull back in close to your queue, they tend to make sure you have plenty of room then.

Sorry to say thats not filtering its classed as dangerouse driving and if caught will get fine and points.

Filtering is when passing slow or stationary traffic safely. If you are going too fast and a car changes lanes you won't have tome to react. Just read all the posts on here about people who have accidents while supposedly filtering next to a junction. Rolling Eyes

Its not something you can learn overnight, it takes years to do it confidently and even then there are still dangers.

I can vouch for that......

Filtering down an A road, traffic at 40, myself at 45, I move into a gap at the same time as a car - result, 1 written off R6.

Buy a GSX-R 600 2 months later, have it for 4 days, filter past a stationary line of traffic at around10 mph - get wiped out by a car deciding to take a right turn as I am level with the driver door......

I now hold up mopeds with my slow, cautious filtering, but I get home in one piece, touch wood.... Wink

its funny how your assessment of a situation can change dramatically, whilst my filter yesterday i went between two artics one in the first lane one in the second lane, halfway alongside the trailers i thought this isnt the brightest idea ive had.

perhaps hazard lights on whilst filtering might be a good idea, especially if blue bulbs are fitted Razz

I filter like a t1t, I'm really cr@p at it. I do do it but slowly and if another bike comes up behind me I move over for them rather than hold them up. I just find it so dangerous. I've noticed some car drivers can get really aggressive if they're stuck in a queue and will do their best to block my path. Don't like to admit it but women seem to get more narked than men with regards to bikes filtering.
