Anyone got one of these or been in one/driven it?

Are they reliable (only doing 10 miles a day) also how are they to run?

Thumbs Up

It's a 'relatively' old TVR, it'll have shit build quality, will be a bugger to insure, will drink fuel like its going out of fashion and will cost you more to keep running than a dutch whore on speed.

Really, are you seriously looking at getting one?

There are better cars that you could get with your hard earned cash, trust me.

You'd get one for the 'rumble' though. Razz

Personally I think you're nuts, keep the saxo. TVR would be a money pit.

Their too outdated, and unrefined. Better off with a Jap supercar, or (I hate to say it) a performance BMW Confused

A Scooby sounds like sex but a TVR is Drooling

The Chimera is a 2+2 so quite practical for a family.

Not for me i'd never get insured. Laughing

My dad wants a fun car to drive to work and has started taking an interest and looking at a few cars.

So far he is interested in a mazda mx5 and an mg something. I told him he should get a real sports car not a girly car with a small engine.

He was looking about and saw the chimera, said he really really liked it, wasn't overly expensive and also said he loved the sound.

I just want to get a few good points that i can massage into the conversations with him about cars and make him choose the tvr. Drooling

If he wants a 2 seater sports car to relive his youth in then buy an MX-5. Forget the image, they are simply one of the best cars that you will ever drive. You can have some fantastic fun at safe speeds and be safe in the knowledge it will never break or let you down.
The TVR is just a rich mans toy with rich mans running costs and the only good thing is the engine note Smile

Pointless even thinking of a TVR. It will cost you £15/mile. Get a Nova or a Micra.

Mark,

I used to work in a TVR dealership up North.
I drove many Chimera, Cerbera, Griffith etc and they are a good toy. Unreliable is not fair, quirky maybe. They need expert care and attention, they are a drivers car, an enthusiasts car, a toy for people who can afford to keep up the servicing.

The engines are bullit proof, based on the age old Buick 3500cc alloy lump. I owned a 350i wedge for a while and hated it, it was crap.. however the Chimera was a vast leap ahead with leather dash board, door panels, alloy fittings, proper switch gear, proper suspension and brakes etc. Paint finish was superb and the electrics were far better than previous.

Would i own one???

YES i would, go for as late a model as you can with FSH by a TVR dealership.... don't buy one with history from some non dealership garage. Others to consider are those serviced by a TVR club member / enthusiast as generally they are even better maintained.
HPI is crucial as is checking the space frame chassis for frontal damage. Check under the bonnet / wings for poor repairs and bad paint. Another regularly damaged area is rear suspension where people who can't drive twat kerbs when they lay the power down too soon.
If your old man has any form of back problem or arthritis then this is NOT the car for him.

BUY IT, ENJOY IT
