I’ve been with my GF for 3 years now, I am truly in love with this girl, and I’d do anything for her.
She is happy with me equally, she has told me this and this makes us very close.
We have been going through a rough time recently, her mum was ill for a while with suspect cancer, it turned out not to be the case, which is great news but she has to be looked after at the moment to recover.
I don’t see a lot of her because she is there until quite late, I don’t mind because I know she needs to do this but I feel subconsciously its making me resent the situation.
She goes out with her friends every Thursday and lets her hair down, which is great for her but I worry she drinks too much and stays out really late, I might sound like a over protective knob for this, but I am concerned about her health.

She is a recruitment consultant, and a good one at that, but she isn’t that happy with it though, this thing with her mum has made her re-think her life and she wants to become a nurse.
We are both 22, so we are on the same level, we live together and manage to pay for bills and things we like.
If she takes on this nurse course she is given a loan as far as I know but the money is not good, most studying nurses have to get a bar job of sorts to cover.
But this isn’t going to pay for the place we live in and I can’t support us both, so I have no idea what to do there.

I might be being selfish here….in fact I know I should accept this but I can’t, I’m looking to the future and I don’t like it.
If she does the course she won’t have to move away, she can travel to the uni, which is good. But when she finishes uni she’ll have to work late I’d expect at a bar or something. So I wouldn’t see much of her, the course takes 3 years, and then she would start work, but I don’t know what to expect, will I see any of her? I mean nurses work in shifts, so I’d be working the 9-5 and she might be working some stupid hours.

This is a lot of rambling, forgive me, I’m just concerned about us as she means everything to me.

A nursing bursary is in the region of £460 a month (yep its that naff for 3 years) and once qualifed you will be expected to work shifts.

I work a combination of the following:

0700-1500

0700-2130 (yes 14 1/2 hours with no break Middle Finger

)

1330-2130

2100-0730

As a profession nursing is quite highly respected and regarded as a good vocation. Nurses are classed in the upper middle class band for morgages, however, the pay blows. Once qualifed you can expect to earn £19k straight away.

Nursing is split into bands (according to the new Agenda for Change)

Band 5 all qualified nurses

Band 6 Sisters or male charge nurses

Band 7 Ward managers

Band 8 Nurse consultants and highly specialised nurses.

To qualify for a 'profession', nursing denotes that you have a University education either a; Diploma of Higher Education Registered Nursing or degree.

You get paid a bursary as mentioned before with the Diploma, but you have to pay for the degree. At the end of the day, you will both qualify at band 5 Rolling Eyes

The 3 years at university involves an ever changing syllabus that changes more times than an incontinents womens pants. The current style of teaching is inquiry based learning (ie they give you a topic and tell you to go away and come back next week with the answers Rolling Eyes

)

The general jist is that is consists of;

Adult nursing

Child nursing

Midwifery

Learning Disabilities nursing

Mental Health nursing

These 5 sectors will be part of the common foundation and make up the 1st year to 18 months after which you will continue in the chosen branch (in my instance adult nursing).

After the common foundation whereby you gain a basic understanding and knowledge of everything, you then start to specialise a little by having placements in;

Surgery

Medicine

Critical care (ITU / HDU / Coronary Care / A&E)

Medicine for the elderly

Community

You will have placements in the aforemention areas for the next 2 years until you qualify. Each placement varies in length maybe from 2 - 8 weeks.

Throughout the 3 years you will have a couple of essays to do for every semester as well as objectives to complete on placements. Thses are generall piss easy as long as you listen and ask questions.

Nursing is NOT Casulty or Holby City, dot even get me started on ER Brick Wall

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (taken over from the English National board of Nurinsg and the UKCC) states that you have to partake in so many hours of both practical and theoretical studies to re-regsiter and maintain your PIN number, and yes it costs shed loads every 3 years. Doctors have to do the same thing to maintaian their registration too.

Since qualifying I have done;

Management of the diabetic patient (ENB 928)

Mentorship in public services (ENB 998)

Diploma in Coronary Care (the old ENB 124)

Advanced Life Support

Venepuncture and cannulation

Male catheterisation

ECG workshop

Clinical Supervision

Leadership at the Point of Care

Loads of other shite in house training and study days

However, unlike Policeman and teachers, you DO NOT get paid for the extra skills and knowledge gained from these courses. The Trust that I work for will only give 50% study time, therefore you work 37 1/2 hours a week, maybe a couple more in overtime to live, be expected to study in you own time and carry on writing the damn essays.

Pay may depend on the University and location ie London will pay more. The age of the student will have a big implication on the salary as does the number of dependants.

Now im not sure on alot of this but my thinkin seems to follow whosthedaddy but my sis has just started training to be a nurse and it is cack money and she was told in no uncertain terms she cannot get another job i.e bar job because it would make her tired and therefore they assume negligent

What you do in your own time is your buisness. Most students do extra overtime on the wards as unqualifed / auxillary nurses. As long as it does not interfere with the studies then they are ok.

Most of the time I had a half week due to all the 'self directed study days' and would take advantage of this free Shifty

time. The drawback to this is that you are expected to show 8 hours study on these days.

Hey Killa, I'm not sure if this will be of any help to you.

Well, my mum is a recovery nurse. Class D or something like that. She's 50 and entered nursing college since she left school. She has nursed all her life since then and atm earns roughly about 21k.

She works part time but her hours are either 9 to 7 (she usually gets home well after 8) or half 11 to 10 (she'll get back about half past and the hospital's a 5 minute walk away).

That's just another nurse's experiences for you, sorry it's not very helpful.

Turns out I was wrong: my girlfriend gets £386 a year, probably cos she lives at home, but it still takes the piss considering how many hours she has to put in. She was reccomended not to get another job as she would be very knackered and the hours she gets from her work placements change very often so the part time job could easily interfere.

She does (very occasionally) work as an auxillary nurse for a company called Medico, but she doesn't do it very often because she's worn out after working all week.
