Today seems to be the day for decisions and changes around here doesn it Laughing

Well i think ive pretty much decided that im going to go back into the motor trade.

A few months ago i posted here for advice from you guys about the computing industry world. After a lot of thought and oppinions from all over the shop, ive pretty much decided to go back to cars and continue with my original aim...

Im planning on getting in on, and completing a high level motor vehicle apprenticeship with a leading brand such as VW/Audi again. Thats a 3 year apprenticeship with a high level qualification and the official VW stamp, which is quite highly respected around the trade.

Upon completing this scheme im going to hopefully spend a year or two progressing through the ranks, getting on as many training sessions and extra courses as i can, and get some experience under my belt.

Then, when im considered "ready" i plan to join up with the AA / RAC for their roadside assistance.

It has always been in the back of my mind as something i realy wanted to do, my uncle did it for a bit and was realy helpfull about it. Im aware that the rotas and working times are awfull... but i realy like working on my own, and helping people etc.

When im out on the bike i will always stop for a stranded biker and do everything i can to get him on his way again, ive had a lot of time sitting in RAC vans over my last year with the GS500, which gave me time to find out about the job from the guys sorting me out etc...

Working out in the cold / rain doesnt bother me at all, to be honest i think its the challenge thats drawing me into it.

Anyway, thankyou to everyone who has given me advice over the last few months etc, just hope it all goes as planned now Thumbs Up

Good luck. I hear the AA recently made 4000 front line staff redundant.

Again? You've completed one already - or you've been on one before but dropped out? I suspect the latter, as there seems little point doing it twice - so what made you drop out last time and what's changed that will stop you dropping out this time? If you've dropped out once, why would they accept you back again?

Yeah, dropped out after completing the first year.

There were many reasons why i didnt go back for the 2nd year. There was a big change over towards the end of the first year where VW Group basically took the contract for the apprenticeship from lots of different sources who all did different sections, and gave it to 1 company who offered everything in one place, cost cutting. In this switch over we (the apprentices) were realy pathetically informed of what was happening, we were told that we might not even be allowed to finish the course etc. In the hussle and bussle many people (including me) had coursework lost and basically we were messed around something stupid, we didnt know what was happening or if we even were going to have a job left.

That was the college side of it, at work i was being thrown around left right and center. I accept i was an apprentice, and a certain amount of stick is going to be attatched to that. That was fine, going to the parts department and asking for a "long weight", sky hooks, all that crap - no worries, i can laugh at that and it gets me off working for a bit Laughing

But as soon as i was able to do one or two jobs (oil changes for example), that was all i was allowed to do. For 7 months straight i was not allowed (by the workshop foreman and service manager) to work on new things and learn different jobs. Each time i tried to learn something new with my techy, i was pulled off half way thru to do a crappy lube service, by the time that was done my techy had finished and i never learnt anything.

However when i told the service manager i was going to leave the scheme to go to college and study computers and programming, he was incredibly sad to see me leave. Turns out i was playing a vital role in the day to day running of the place, and as a result i had more responsability on my shoulders than some of the more experienced mechanics there. For that reason i got a sterling reference and the offer to go back to them if i ever came back to the industry.

Although i dont want to go back to that dealer, i took that to mean that it should be relatively easy for someone with a years experience allready, someone who knows what its going to be like, and is prepared to sign up for 3 years, to get back onto the scheme with ease.

However i am prepared to be rejected because i did leave early previously, but i will only find out one year.

As i type this, that AA advert is running behind me on the TV, and inspiring me and reminding me what it is im doing all this for Very Happy

I wish i could decide on what career path i want to do.

I thought i wanted to do travel, but the wages are shite, there's hardly any jobs unless you have 2 years travel experience.

Thinking of going down the Nursing route like my Mum did. That way have a valuable career and could also use it to go and work in places like Australia/USA/ Armed forces etc.

But in the meantime while i decide i need get a tempory job.
