we all know about counter steering but what about Counter-Counter-Steering

Found this while (not) working Laughing

The site has quite a few interesting articles on all about bikes and how to's https://www.virginiawind.com/tips/

Anybody have a clue whats he's talking about or do it/done it, sounds like something I gota try Laughing

That's probably not the right term, but we're all familiar with the concept of counter-steering and in fact I would like to propose that you can't really ride without practicing it on a regular basis. Counter-steering is something that happens as a part of the dynamics of a turn.

Conventional wisdom has it that you should force more counter-steering to more aggressively control your turn, but I'd like to propose that in some circumstances it's advisable to take the opposite action - what I'm calling counter-counter-steering.

To initiate a turn, banking your bike is accomplished by applying pressing on the handgrip in the direction you want to go, i.e. press right go right. However, what if you want to keep your bike more upright instead of leaning into the turn? The answer; you counter-counter-steer. Sounds a little screwy, but let me give you an example.

There's a shopping center off the main road I take on my ride home each day that's down a short hill. When leaving the shopping center, I pull up the hill, initiate a right hand turn, then enter the level surface of the main road. In effect, the roadbed falls away and I'm suddenly in a reverse banked roadbed situation at low speed with far more lean than I need for the turn. In addition, the main road is slightly banked for a left turn anyway, and there's frequently loose gravel or sand on the edge of the main road, so doing a low side slide out is a very real possibility. I need to reduce my lean angle to bring the bike more upright, but at over a half a ton of weight on the tires, horsing it around isn't an option.

What is needed in this type situation is to maintain turn radius, but at the same time decrease the lean angle. To do this, apply pressure to the handgrip opposite the direction you wish to turn - counter-counter-steering. The effect is that motorcycle begins to right itself. By controlling the amount of pressure you can lift the lean while still maintaining your approximate turn radius. It should be noted, however, that over-enthusiastic pressure can easily cause your bike go beyond the optimum balance point and send you over the side. This is not a tool for high speed turns! Practice and bit before you try it on the road.

Ride safely.

All he's saying is that you can counter steer in the opposite direction of turn to right the bike slightly. TBH, i would consider that if you need to decrease the angle of lean, you are not going fast enough! By adding acceleration, you can increase the centrifugal force which starts to stand the bike up.

I don't really understand the point of that tip to be honest. You do it all the time when riding. How else do you pick the bike up quickly through a right then left, or vice versa, if you don't counter-steer from one side to the other? All he is saying is you can stand the bike up slightly by counter steering in the opposite direction, or, more precisely, by letting off some pressure on the handlebar. I would have thought that was obvious Confused

Most of this counter steering lark is instinctive and natural for all riders, trying to write about it and make people understand te physics behind it makes it appear like its rocket science.

hmm well if thats his amazing tip Rolling Eyes

sounded to me like he was putting the bike into a turn with lean, then taking the lean off but keeping the turn at the same angle.

Basically you do that by going slower. If you want to go fast round a corner, you need to increase the lean angle to sharpen up the turn and offset the bikes tendancies to go straight. The faster you go, the more it wants to go straight (which is why it takes more effort to turn the bars at speed) so the more you have to lean. To lean less, but turn the same radius, you need to slow down.

If you hadn't noticed, his counter-counter steering is really just counter-steering.

All he's saying is that to pull the bike out of the turn, you push the handlebar which is farthest from the road. This is standard counter-steering.

To push the bike into the turn you pushed the handlebar closest to the direction you wish to turn (this handlebar subsequently becomes the closest handlebar to the road). And then to right the bike you push the opposite handlebar, which is also a countersteer manouver since you're turning the wheel towards the corner which your turning yet the bike is tipping in the opposite direction.

The man is quite obviously an idiot, but since he's American I guess we'll let him off. Wink

Nah, not that weird really. Same as riding at 5mph in a carpark. Countersteering only starts working when you're doing 15mph or so.

Anyway, if you're not having to countersteer round a hairpin then you're riding like a gayer. Razz

Well spotted Suzuki, thats exactly how i read it Thumbs Up

Why he doesn't just open the throttle with maybe a little weight on the outside peg is a mystery though Confused

I think the point of it was the guy was trying to make it sound like a new concept, rather than the old 'what's this counter-steering thing?' "discussion."
