The past couple of weeks my back has been in bits. I think all the physical work I do has finally killed it. Bending, lifting, even getting out of bed and getting up from chairs hurts like f*ck. I'm only 30 FFS! Barely riding the bike at the moment cause the f*cker cripples me. Time for a Bandit 1200 I think so I'm not hunched over the tank.

Anyone else here suffer from one? Any exercises etc you can do to help?

When it comes to back injuries, the best option is to go to the doctors for medical advise. If it's hurting as much as you say then I wouldn't recommend just hoping it wears off just in case it is serious.

Your doctor will advise you to rest it for about five weeks also take two ibruprofen and two co-codemol three times a day. If its still bad the doctor may give you something a bit stronger like kapake or tramadol.
Trouble is, once you've hurt your back it can only get worse. I know this from bitter experience.

I suppose I'd better pop and see the work nurse tomorrow. Confused I'm not taking 5 weeks off though. In two weeks time I have a week off then I'm in for a week then I'm off for a week. I'll rest it on the first week. Laughing

Hi,

I can highly recommend osteopaths, sorted my back out. I found the quack utterly useless.

One of the exercises I do which seems to help more than most is strengthening my back muscles (along the spine to support it more).

I lie on my front, with my chin on a pillow and arms by my side, palms facing upwards.

Then slowly - very slowly, lift my arms, shoulders and legs (straight) up about an inch.
Repeat it about 12 times to start with - resting in between each 'lift'.

Don't try to do it quickly, this isn't to get your heart racing. Take time to make sure you are lifting each side equally and you are lying straight.

TBH doctors are the last place I go with any muscle or joint related injury. I put my back out a couple of years ago after a full contact fight at the club I was training at and literally couldn't walk for a few days. The pain was so bad my ex had to phone the hospital for an ambulance (lol, and they said it was so common they couldn;t spare an ambulance so I had to crawl into a cab).

Anyhoo the doctor prescribed my some codeine and paracetomol and told me to keep mobile Rolling Eyes

After a few days it settled and I went to my GP. He prescribed iboprofen and offered me no advice at all.

I then went back and pleaded to see the physiotherapist. I got forwarded and she gave me a handfull of stretchs to do to strengthen my back muscles. I already did those stretches in my training. After adhearing to them for a few months, no real improvement.

Sooooo the moral of the story is doctors don't know jack about backs and all a doctor will do is prescribe pain killers to mask the problem.

I went to see a osteopath six months ago and they deal exclusively with soft muscle damage. Immediately he told me I'd knocked my pelvis out of line and as a result one leg was shorter than the other....the offsetting of the weifght was what was crippling my back. I had a few sessions with him and my back improved dramatically.

I then went to see an chiropracter who specialises in repositioning bones so they are in there correct alignment...fuck me, you've never felt relief from pain as when they click your back....its like a mad release of pressure Thumbs Up

anyhow my chiropracter reckons most people have a back definciency, its just that they ignore it. Even if you are fine he recommends a quick 'tune up'. IMO they are far more usefull than a doctor and a handful of painkillers and worth their fee, since £25 versus severe pain isn't an argument in my book Wink

If the problem is muscular then you will find being idle and not moving causes the pain to be worse, since the damaged muscles have got cold, which is madness as it means your in less pain when your actually moving about.

A good way I have found to relieve my back pain is to get one of those slimming pad units, the ones that alledgedly zap your six pack into shape, and attach the pads to the affect area of your back. Bang it on and it not only acts as a good massaging device (and according to my osteopath it will help dislodge any scar tissue on the affected muscles), but it stops the muscles getting cold so it acts as an excellent means of pain relief. I've found on some days the little pack has made the difference between being imobile and walking! Thumbs Up

Been there, had that Thumbs Up

For immediate relief, as said, paracetamol and ibufrofen together is ok (ashma sufferers are advised against ibuprofen btw). The paracetamol gets the pain and the ibuprofen deals with any soft tissue damage.

For long term I would agree to see a chiropracter. Mine gave me exercises to strengthen back muscles so they act as a splint.

Failing that, I doubt it a naked Bandit 1200 will fit your needs. Better accept you're getting old and change to this...

Ultimately your backs probably not fucked beyond repair....get yourself down to a chiropracter and start loking after it so when you hit 45 your not a cripple!

Do a search for TENS units or TENS machine. These are the little devices that give you little electric shocks. Used for pain relief and some muscle toning.

HTH Thumbs Up

TBH I haven't tried the TENS unit, but from what I can gather it works in a different method. The toning pads actively stimulate the muscle into movement where as the TENs unit stilmulates some kind of natural painkiller. I must try one at some point.

The TENS unit jerks the muscle too, just not as much. I've got a Boots model, similar to this. Works quite well - bit like getting a deep muscle massage.

Been a lot better today than it has been for a while. Refusing to pick heavy/large things up in work without help is making life easier. Work mates are pretty understanding to stuff like that. Being hunched over the pc most nights probably isn't helping. Going to look in a better chair and maybe a slighly higher desk. Spending less time on here may be an idea too. Awful set up this.

I have a mate that has his back crunched by one of those back doctor type people from time to time, think I'll give him a bell.

Haven't had any real time off since Christmas which probably isn't helping. So going to enjoy the time of I have this month.

Thanks for the advice guys. I didn't realise there were so many fellow cripples on here.

I've recently got one of those memory foam type matresses, so much better now in the mornings and I've only had it 4 days! Very Happy

Your posture can have a big effect on you, watch how you sit at the computer etc, and don't bend over to pick stuff up, bend your knees instead, or if you need to bend over for some reason Shocked , use your arm to support your weight by leaning on something, 'build a bridge' as they say.

Thumbs Up

Back stretches and situps will help strengthen the supporting back muscles which will help give you a stronger bath...try and make it routine when you get up in the morning as you would brushing your teeth. It'll pay dividends in the future Wink

I wouldn't worry about your age vd back problems. My back has been fucked since I was 25 and I train more vigoursly now than ever. You have to learn to live with it though and learn what triggers its and then avoid doing it Very Happy

Same experience for me.
I was going back again and again to the doctor and, although he would examine me, he didn't have a bloody clue. He just kept dishing out pain killers.

A friend recommended I try an osteopath. I was amazed, it was as if he could read my back like a book. He even asked if I was suffering from chest pains, which I was at the time. God knows how he picked up on that! I did have to make quite a few return visits and, as things were getting better, he showed me a number of exercises to strengthen the muscles to help prevent future problems.

Go see someone, get it sorted out.

Couldn't agree more. It really is a case of learning what triggers the pain and what eases it.
When you are doing something (like lifting or sitting etc) really think about how your back is - ask yourself is it straight? Am I putting uneven strain on it? Am I twisting?
When you find what you are doing wrong then you can go about correcting it and changing your methods.

I suffer with my back but its linked to my injury, but I find the best things to help alleviate it right now are never sitting crossed legged or crossed at the ankle, sit upright where possible. Also invest in a decent mattress (one which moulds itself to your shape) and a NASA pillow, again moulded. Use a V-pillow when reading in bed, as it keeps you aligned.

And as you lie in bed, keep your knees bent, rock them gently from side to side, and this will help align your spine and pelvis, then gently lower your legs.

Sleep on your back if possible, but if you do lie on your side, sleep with a pillow between your legs to stop your spine/pelvis from twisting.

Very important that your sleeping time is comfortable - if you think of the time you spend in there.

Then seek professional help, I found both Chiro and accupunture work on mine.

I ride the naked sv because the riding style doesnt hurt my back.
