I've picked up bikes before and left a note on the bike to say what happened.

One time in the uni bike bay there was this moped on its side (a vespa classic of somesort), some chav bastards must have kicked it over.

I wondered if I should pick it up, but ended up just leaving it as it was for reasons already mentioned here. I really didn't want to be seen tampering with the bike, because someone could have given my description and bike description to the owner who would have then thought I had knocked his bike over. Thus the owner would be out for revenge...which I really could do without. Laughing

I can happily pick up most bikes up on my own, including 600/1000 sport bikes, but I would leave any bike that didn't belong to me unless I knew whos it was, as its far too easy to be blamed for knocking it over or trying to nick it or something or something.... easier just to leave it be! it's a sad world when we have to be like this, but I'd rather leave it than be accused of knocking it over!

Mine went for a wander for the first time since I've owned it today - Thunderace, around 230kg wet. It hurts when you catch it with only one hand free Sad (garage keys in other - had turned for a few seconds to shut garage door).

One of the bike mags this month has an article on how to lift a fallen bike, and whilst looking for somewhere else to get a hold on it, I remembered - both hands on handlebar nearest you and lift - came up easy.

Thankfully only damage was the tiniest of scuffs to the crash mushroom, which is what I'd put them on for (last week!). God knows why the bike went for walkies - was on it's stand, turned round, saw it falling out the corner of my eye and tried to catch it :S

Sprained wrist for my troubles, but at least it's not gonna cost me anything Smile

I'd pick it up and leave a note.

The longer it is on its side, the more chance of the engine fluid-locking with sump oil.

Personally, I'd go and let the owner of the bike know first then help them pick the bike up.

Id probably do something along these lines too, bike on it's side is not a good thing after all...

I was told by a bloke on a carpark once that he had just picked my bike up 'cause he found it on it's side. Although there were no scratches on it. Thinking

If i knew whose bike it was i wouldnt hesitate in picking it up (and i hope they would do the same for me), if it was someones bike who i didnt know i would offer to help them pick it up, just incase i dropped it and caused further damage.
may seem like double standards but if you drop a mates bike while trying to pick it up they should realise that you wouldnt do it maliciously and your just a cack handed duffer.

I would more than likely raise a bike back up if i saw it on its side... although it would depend on what the bike was.

By this i mean, if it was a scooter - in a pretty dodgy state that looks like its being ridden by some 16 year old chav thats likely to get his whole ghetto on me because he thinks im knicking it - i would leave it. However if it was something quite big, and blatently an "adults" bike i would try and raise it because i reckon theres more chance of them understanding, and less chance of the bike catching fire from leaking petrol etc...
