SV650S????

I went window shopping yesterday and saw the 2006 SV650s and am very tempted. Does anyone here ride one and what do you think of it? Currently ride a VFR400 so is there a big difference and is it worth the change? Any suggestions?

I ride the older mode.
Some people claim there's a big difference between the new and the old model, others claim there isn't.

Personally, for 'fun' riding, I'd stick with the VFR anyday.
The SV engine is 'easier' to use to go the same speed, but much less rewarding when you do, in my opinion.

I definitely wouldn't be paying new prices for one - think the 06 model will be pretty much the same as the 03 model.

They're a sound bike, fast enough but not pant wetting fast.
Some people find them a bit tall?
Had one 3 years and only gripe is uncomfortable seat.
Seems to dig in top of my thighs aftre a couple of hours.
Tail tidy improves the rather bizarre looking rear mudguard/numberplate mount.
I get about 60mpg.

I've only ridden a 99 Curvey SV, Had nice low down and midrange grunt and lacked anything topend which took some fun out. Fairly easy to ride and sounded lovely with a race can.

I know it was probably this bike due to it's age and milage but the handling was total and utter shite, I was pushing it hard and fast and it wasnt liking any of it. The front end was shaking at every bump and the rear was wollowing at the same time. Very scary.

Having not ridden a sports 400 I cant really comment. I like mine, but then most of my riding is urban.

The front forms really could do with uprating, many people replace the springs. If I whack a pot hole too hard, it can have a nasty judder to it.

I've got an 03 model, so before the frames went black. Not bad looks wise, I have the naked version.

Only down side is the suzuki quality. Even in the summer, I've started to spot surface rust on exposed parts. Not too great.

Would probably buy one again, I might go for the 1000 next.

Oh, it is quite a high ride for a twin.

I ride the 2001 model, I love it, its nippy, its a v twin so its fab for round town, its quick off the mark and economical on everything. Some say its not that good for long commutes, but ive ridden from Hampshire to Cheshire in terrible windy conditions and did fine...went to a rally with all my kit on my bike - no probs.

I would suggest you always test ride a bike before buying it though, some say the sv is quite tall, I wouldnt know Ive got long legs and sit on it with bent knees...

I too went from a Bros 400 to the sv, and found the sv lighter and easier to ride. If it comes with Metzler tyres, swap them to Dunlop 207's, these are absolutely the best tyre for this bike.

Thanks for the responses. I have looked at the specs for the SV and to be honest they dont look much different to my VFR, top speed it says is 133 at 70bhp. mmm, now do I go for an SV, look for an R6 or have hubbys ZX6 and he can have a bigger bike? I dont like these decisions.

There have been quite a few changes actually between the k3 and k4. And then the k4 to the k5/6. Most useful is that the seat was changed to a nice squishy gel seat on the k5/k6 so it's a LOT more comfy to ride.

Changes from k3 to k4

Lowered rear subframe 5mm
Moved footpegs back slightly 5mm
Changed oil cooler position
Changed downpipe design
Increased power by 2hp to 72hp
Increased torque by 3ft/lb to 47.9 ft/lb

Changes from k4 to k5

Suspension now made by Showa
Changed radiator design
Changed that seat
Introduced the black coloured frame
Added small cowl to naked version's clocks

(There are also a lot of differences between the naked and faired versions. They are not simply the same bike with the fairing removed)

I've owned it exactly 1 year from today (1st August) and covered 14000 miles in all weather conditions purely pleasure miles so you know I must really like it. It still looks like the day I bought it, dispite having been white with salt in winter!

As standard they come with a set of dunlops that are pretty dire to say the least. The don't grip in the wet at all and the compounds so hard they take a long time to warm up. In short if you keep them on you will come off as a result of them slipping out from under you! Change them and you will immediatly notice the difference. The most popular tyres at present are Metzler Z6's and Conti Road Attacks (currently on mine). Before that I had 020's as per the pics. To be fair, they were not bad either.

Right, decision made. I think I would get bored too quickly of the SV as much as it is a lovely bike so im sticking to sports bikes and on the hunt for an R6 this weekend

i have a 2001 sv650s its my first "big bike" up from my nsr125rr i have no bad feedback from it only that it tops out a little easy at 130mph and when braking hard the front end tends to dip and up get the back wheel lifting up off the floor a little i dont know if they have fixed the problem with when it rains on the new model as the front wheel flicks water up on the the top of the cylinder and stops the front cylinder from sparking but a front extender mud gaurd fix's that problem.

stick with the NC30 , I did a post which gave about 150 replies which over whelmingly said the NC30 was a better machine,

with the only things in favour of the SV being :

its newer (but of course newer doesn't mean more reliable)

lower maintenance since the SV650 is a commuter bike pretending to be a sports bike , while the NC30 is a HRC bred racing machine with ancillaries to make it a road bike,

is 2-3 insurance groups cheaper (SV650S = 10 , SV650 = 9)


However my critieria for chosing was based on corner attack ability as I already have a commuting bike at home.

However if you want to get rid of your NC30 I'm sure I'll give you a good price for it.
