I've been wondering about this recently, as one does; I'm sure the noise you get when you open a fizzy drink can sounds some how more satisfying and 'right' than it used to.

So have the companies specifically played with the way the can etc works so that it makes a more satisfying sound?

i suspect it has been tuned for satisfaction but it could just be a happy side effect of a change of design.

It's more likely just to do with how you open it. We can't get coke syrup at the pub I work at right now, so we have cans. So I end up opening about 30 cans a night, and I've gotten quite adept at it - 2 at once, anyone? Mr. Green If you open it in one quick motion the sound is great.

Mister G

I have taken the liberty of deciding that YOU HAVE FAR TOO MUCH TIME TO THINK!!! Laughing

But if you need to know, Mr Goose now has an electronic tuning device, I am sure with the amounts of fizz he consumes, he will now undertake a project to find out what key the can opening issues, and whether they are all the same and tuned....

Watch this space...

Intresting, but how many of you remember the old type of can ring pull that detached from the can?

Then if you broke it in two, you had a little frizby thing going on. Thumbs Up

Err, no. But the new ones stay on the tin and you can't shake it up and have the same effect when opening. Quite poor really.
I blame all kids being bored and vandalising things entirely on this.

Nope, I just look it. In fact the attached ring pulls were only introduced in 1989.

I remember them being replaced with various new opening devices, including the utterly rubbish two button thing, you push one down and it lets the gas out, then you stick your finger through the other one to actually drink. They never worked. Sad *edit - can't find a bloomin' photo of one*

Stick - that's it, set Mr Goosey a project to keep him quiet for a while Wink I'm looking forward to the results Laughing

Well VW spend the most money on the sound of the indicator plinking sound.

I’d say coke spend a few quid on the mm depth of metal contact to create a satisfying sound when opened..

That I don't know, but I do know that the introduction of the retained ring pull for beer cans was a year later in 1990.

Dance! More fascinating drinks can facts Dance!

The widget was first used in draught beer cans in 1992, later introduced to lager cans in 1994

The first coloured pull was used in 1995

Drinks cans are filled at a rate of up to 2000 per minutes

ok... that's enough Laughing

I like the way you used to be able to use the bit of metal that sealed the hole as a launcher for the ring part by turning it on it's side and slotting it into the part it attached to. Twang.

If I'd have known...
When I moved out of home aged 17, When my father and I moved my wardrobe out, There was an old style can of coca-cola behind there (proper ring pull type) all of the contents had evaporated even though the can was still sealed.... I think I may have thrown out a prospective future antique Crying or Very sad

How I miss the frizby (*sp) thing. Very Happy Although it was annoying as sh1t when the ring came off in your hand and the f*ckin' can was still closed. Then you had to stab the f*cker open with your keys or a pen.

You don't apply the correct leverage. If you push at the wrong angle you put force on the ringpull, but not on the metal bit which pushes into the can, so the ring pull just bends. Adjust your can opening technique! Laughing
