Why is that exactly?

I have yet to try this ACF 50 stuff due to the cost but it does sound like it's a lot better.

The scottoiler stuff doesn't seem to leave any protective coating so needs put on repeatedly to make a difference I find. I just use wd40 to be honest, my er5 lived on it.

im not a fan of spray fancy goo, all over bike to protect it, either leave it and just spray whatever is cheap and handy to tide you over and then strip it all apart and paint/coat or something like that to stop the corrioson from ever starting and then then get buffy and polish everything up, thats far better and will make your bike keep its value more than covered in goo.

acf 50 £15 for about 400 ml spray can

FS365 £5 for a litre ,(my ntv stopped rusting once i used it ).

a litre of FS365 lasted 8 months, with regular applications, doesn't seem that worth it,

My mate 'Jon' from www.superblackbird.co.uk does it too, maybe a tad cheaper.

FS365 is usually £7 a litre - unless you buy 6 litres, then you get it all for £30 with free postage.

ACF-50 is around £12.50 a 13oz can or £28 a litre on EBay.

I use ACF-50 once at the start of winter and then FS365 after every hose down of the bike (except in Summer, when I only use it occasionally).

Not quite sure what you meant by:

Surely if it was cheap, lasted ages and stopped your bike rusting, it was well worth it?

WD40's ok, but it burns onto the downpipes/engine leaving dark hard to remove marks. It also does nothing to salt other than hopefully cover the metal and stop it getting to it.

The snag with ACF50 is that once applied that's it. Sounds far better than FS365, which is water-soluble and needs to be reapplied after every wash/ride in the rain.

To many that’s a disadvantage, but it’s actually an advantage and sole reason why I like iFS365 over the other options. In winter after a ride out the bike is white with salt. So you put it in the garage and let it cool. As soon as that's done you spray a fine mist over/in the main areas of the bike that you know salt builds up. You then walk away and relax knowing the FS365 is chemically reacting with and inhibiting the salt.

The next day the bike gets even dirtier and so another fine mist is applied.

And so on until the weekend by which time your bike is covered in FS365 soaked dirt.

As soon as soapy water hits the FS365 it dissolves in the water, leaving no residue and taking the dirt with it. After drying (in winter this means using the heat generated by the engine running until all the nooks and cranny's are dry) a quick mist of FS365 protects any damp areas from furring and protects the bike from the first initial salt whilst it sits outside work/uni for 8 hours on Monday.

When you get home the cycle is repeated. Yes you go through a LOT of FS365. I go through a gallon in winter, but that’s still cheaper than one application of ACF50. If you want proof, see my SV - It did nearly 8000 miles last winter and it came though looking exactly like it did when I first bought it from the showroom. For a supposedly budget Suzuki that’s quite a result!

…………………

Now the deal with ACF50 is that once applied you are supposed to forget about it. Great, so under all that dirt you just don’t know what’s happening. It doesn’t readily wash off in water and whilst the top layer might come away with the dirt through contact with soap it’s not really supposed to be washed all that often or you start to remove it. Requiring an reaplication - approx £25 a time as one can is just not enough.

It was designed for the inside of Aeroplane wings. An area that doesn't often see daylight let alone soapy water every weekend!

No, I prefer to work on the washing/protecting as an active and on-going process. In my view it’s the only way to keep on top of salt corrosion allowing you to prevent it happening and if it does take action early, not look in horror come spring.

:S

I thought £23 was a good price to have the internals of your bike done with ACF50.

Do that every year, and get a £12 spray can, spray a fine mist every week or so, using a rag to wipe the excess carefully onto brake calipers and wheel rims...

That's the plan for my next bike anyway...

Yes, it does.

Or just wash the salt off with water?

And that is compared to a years application of ACF50 that will withstand repeated washing?

Where are you getting this information from? You're using 2 CANS of ACF on a bike a time?! ROFL!

Just the inside? I thought it was a cable lubricator, rust inhibitor and a water repellant!

Or just, as I said, have an internal spray every year and reapply ACF to the outside every one in a while.

If you wish to use ACF then go ahead and use it. Myself I prefer to use what has been tried successfully on two of my bikes now over two winters and both have come through unmarked.

My point which you seemed to have missed is that whilst ACF50 does an outstanding job of protecting from corrosion it was designed with the inside of aircraft in mind. The inside of an aircraft doesn't receive a constant battering from wind, rain, salt and hose pipes. It just gets occasional pools of water settling here and there from rain ingress/washing leaking through access hatches, faulty pop riviting etc.

As such, in that kind of enviroment it lasts for a year and only needs replacing annually.

BUT a motorcycle, particularly if it's a naked bike, is constantly hit by the full force of 90mph+ winds, rain, salt and lots of water from a hose pipe. It's supposed to stay put, but in reality it doesn't as nothing can withstand tha above AND have biker washing it once a week - and most are pretty thorough on their washing Wink

So it needs to be re-applied - often. Now whilst you can't put a price on protecting from corrosion, if there is a product that is DESIGNED to be replied often and if used as such does just as good a job as ACF50 (aswell as being significantly cheaper and actually designed for motorcycles not planes) then surely it's the one to use on a motorcycle Question
