...hmmm courier work?

I'm thinking (as I always am) about how best to preserve/earn money and I wonder how courier work works? Obviously right now I'm not in a position (not being confident on the bike etc.) but in the future it's a possibility? Or is it one of those jobs that you'd really rather not do?

Looked into it and looks quite good if you can hack the congested city.

Big problem, particularly if your young, is insurance. Not the end of the world as it's made out by some but more expensive than is comfortable. You also don't make an amazing amount of money. Sitting on your arse in a reasonably easy job would earn you alot more.

Compared to what you could earn sitting in an office after going up the ranks a few years then I doubt it. I assume it's also alot harder to be a courier compared to office work, mentally and physically.

And I am pretty firm in the opinion that everybody ultimately grows to hate their job so I guess it would take all the fun out of owning a motorbike.

It's something im looking to do in a year or two after i pass my test Wink

but to be
honest a "car /van" driving job would be alot smoother and probably alot safer.

Thats also something im looking into doing in the future some time Wink

I was a dispatch rider for two years. I loathed it. You will be spat upon, looked down upon, you will get dirty, you will get home at night and look in the mirror and realise how blackened your face is from road grime. Taxi's will cut you up and do their utmost to have eating gutter grime. Your controller will be screaming your name over the airwaves whether you're 'POB', you will get lost, you'll get nicked for some minor contravention of the road traffic act and the firm you work for will knock you. You'll be despondent, detached and disheartened. You'll wish you never took the path of becoming a grob.

The only way you're gonna cut it in the dispatch trade now is to have an extensive knowledge of the routes of your firms clients and long distance work. Long distance work will always go to the firms favourite and if you've just started the only work you'll be doing is picking up small letters that have to dropped to the street that runs paralell with the one you're one. The porblem is, to get to that street you have to go round a five mile one way system.

There are more pleasent vocations in life than dispatch riding. Trust me.

I think I've heard that it's up there in the top 3 most dangerous jobs in the city (London anyway).

I have quite a few Aussie mates who have given it a go but it is soul crushing work, even worse than being a cycle courier if you can believe that.... Sad

If you're keen to work on a bike you should try a fast response freelance services, I don't know maybe "Gigolos to Go" or something nieche like that.....
