I really wanted to start a topic about how to get around 33hp restrictors because 2 years is a long time.

Correct me if im wrong but with the electric restrictors do they mount a small box on your bike, like a cdi, and this controls your revs (green wire). If this is so wouldn't it be possible to break one of the wires coming off the restrictor, put a switch in it and tuck it behind your frame, because this way you could ride around as normal at 33bhp but when you needed a little more power you could flick a switch and you would then have the full power of the bike.

If you get valves put in your downpipes/exhaust couldn't you take them out file them down a little and then put them back in the theory that your now restricted to something higher that 33bhp.

Any more ideas?

2 years is a long time and I won't lie to you, most of the time...my bikes have been over the 33bhp limit.

However - I found being restricted to 33bhp made me a better rider. Now I know you probably don't think like that yet as all your mind is focussing on is power, power, power. But trust me, try and get near the limits of your 33bhp bike and when the period lifts, you'll be a much better rider for it. Being able to utilise a bikes power etc etc etc.

I don't know how modern bikes are restricted, I understand its swapping the ecu/cdi box for a 33bhp one (suzuki do this anyway with the sv650) You could always just plug one box in and keep the other underneath the seat, just incase?

This is all pretty irrelevant anyway since I don't know what kind of bike you have and how it's restricted.

Re: Valves in downpipes, where did that come from? You get that on 2 stroke bikes and I don't think they've anything to do with being restricted to 33bhp thats for sure. Confused Confused

Dont worry the valves in downpipes thing wasn't initialy my idea, i saw it on the forum somewhere.

I was just worried how a bike would feel with being restricted to 33bhp, does it prevent you getting into the higher rev range? does it just restrict you to a certain speed? Anyone explain it?
Thanks

Why bother with a partial restriction when its just as illegal as fully restricting your bike.

I've not had to go through the restriction process myself but in principal agree with what Instigator is saying about making you a better rider if you stick with it.

What bike do you have by the way?

Beleive me i will keep is at 33 bhp for 4 or 5 months to get used to it anyway, but it would be nice to have the bikes full potential.

from riding other peoples restricted bikes the only way i can describe it is it feels about the same as normal low down but without the top end 'rush' you get normally, it will still go into the higher revs there just wont be much power there and yes its illegal to derestrict it in any way, and yes it will make you a better rider in the long run IMO

Not at all. It doesn't restrict you to a maximum speed per se, jsut restricts the bike to produce more than 33bhp. So you might go faster if you have less fuel or the wind is pushing you in the right direction. Laughing

Basically, if you haven't ridden a big bike before then 33bhp will feel perfectly normal. It'll feel lightening fast at first but you will get used to it and there will be a point where a couple of weeks down the line, you might think what it'd be like de-restricting it. Unless you choose a bike like a rs250, then it won't feel particularly breathless if set-up right. It'll have power throughout the rev range (and you can use all the rev range), just where the power would usually kick in when the bike is full power, it'll be less substantial being restricted.

So, don't ride the bike unrestricted first, ok. Then you won't get bored so quick. Laughing

For reference, I had my sv650s nearly indicating 120mph when it was 33bhp. Okay, so it's probably 10mph out but 110 is still quite quick and I'll be honest, my current full power bike doesn't get near that anyway (I just ride quite relaxed).

I totally agree with this, as I have found the same thing. Have patience and enjoy the learning experience.

With the handling it depends what you want to restrict. Obviously restricting something with a higher BHP will handle and perform less well than something that is already just a little over the 33BHP limit. I restricted a 60BHP bike and it handled just fine. You do lose a bit of the pull from the revs after about 5000, but seeing as it only went to 9000 before redlining it wasn't really a problem.

Carb restrictions all well and good kept em in the divvy for the best part of 10 months, and wouldnt have a problem with doing it for a little while again.

Throttle restrictions are a pain in the ass, feel terribly unnatural, and the fact i dont have full play leaves me worried if i were in an awkward sitaution.

I think a year would be plenty enough as a fixed timescale and 1 year advisory/probatory (as in a speeding offence would have them back in).

2 years is a long time.

My GSXR was restricted via the washers and a throttle block, it got lifted last weekend after my 2 years were up.
It's a lot more fun, honestly I love it now and I would never go back, but I'm glad I did my time, I can recall many occasions where I know if I had more power I would have ended up tits up face down in the gutter, and it has (as everyone says) allowed me to reach my "peak" of riding ability on my bike as it was before stepping up, yes it's a long time but looking back I can see it was the best choice for me, at the end of the day it is your call, but definately give it a while before you even think about taking them off.
I meant to make some huge thread about it and how it was for me and all that related jazz, but if I'm not working I'm riding, speaking of which rush hour traffic will be slowing up, time to get back out there :>

****EDIT**** I forgot I'm on someone elses computer and wrote it under thier name (I.E I'm not kitten :S . . . . .

I think he's mainly talking about my bandit. I went from an derestricted RS125 to a 33Bhp Bandit 6. I was fully restricted for 2 years and to be honest I'm glad. I chose the bandit as I needed to cover alot of miles. It would have a top speed of about 95-100, which is about the same as the RS125, but it was much better for long distances. I found having a lower power bike made me think more about how to get extra speed, like cornering etc. It was also nice to have had experience of the bigger bike without the power jump.

If you want to ride fast on the road then keep the restrictors in.

The only place I could do with more power on my 33bhp bike is on dual carriageways or motorways. Everywhere else I am restricted by my own ability. With full power I would also get myself into more problematic situations than I do at the moment.

Once I can ride to near the potential of my restricted bike then it is worth removing them, assuming this is before the 2 years are up. I doubt I'd be able to make the bike go as fast as some after a decade of riding, let alone a few months or even 2 years.

Take the 33hp stuff off, its simple, you will have no valid licence or insurance. ride it like that, you have no other choise, and keep the same bike when the restrition is up if will feel like a much faster bike but you will have a very good idea of its stopping ability and how it handles.

wasnt asked for mine by my insurance, ridden round for about a month, they then phoned me and asked, so put it in for its restrictor kits, they wernt in 10 mins then i took them out.

I have the paper work saying its restricted, so in my and hopefully the coppers eyes im legal.

I now use my restrictors for one purpose only (see pic)

if you ever crashed it and the insurance people had a look at it and found out no restrictors are there that will land you in a load of trouble.

Its fine de-restricting it until you twat some innocent 3rd party and your insurance won't pay out because you fettled with the restrictor.
Its an offence which could see you banned (Driving otherwise than in accordance with your licence) meaning, your NOT licenced to ride the bike thus NO insurance.

On all the forums i've been on i don't know 1 person that's been caught with no restrictors.

I decided not to put them in because that was the whole point of buying a 600 because i wanted speed, if i wanted a 33bhp bike i would of got a 125, no point in paying full insurance for half the bike really.

Stevah... it might be a stupid question but what kind of restrictor is that and how much did it cost to get it fitted?

While this has been brought up, is there any way to 'ajust' a throttle restriction for a z750s to give more but not the full hp?

I've heard of one biker getting done for being above 33bhp and he got 3 points.

I've never done it, I'm still 33bhp, I could have done DAS but passed my self and never could be arxxed for the accelerated access.

My bike gets to about 95 maybe a tonne, about 20 down on full power top speed. I have just started reaching its limit on back country roads to be honest and i've been riding about 18 months.
