I have caught a cold, but aside from the usual sore throat, dripping nose, coughing and sneezing, I've got an ear infection. I just got back from the doctors with a prescription of Amoxicillin, and the pressure has really started building, I know it's going to be agony.
My concern is that I'm going on holiday to Tenerife on Monday, will I encounter any problems because of pressure changes when we're flying? |

I took a couple of paracetamol and it's not hurting too badly, but the pressure is still there. I have a eeling it's linked to my tonsils or something, the doc said there's a cyst in my mouth somewhere.
I think I'll try and get my mitts on some stronger painkillers too. I'm just really worried if it hasn't cleared up by Monday the pressure change on the plane will rupture my ear drum. |

That's the problem, I don't think I'll have time to sort that out before I go. When I went to the doctors today my ear wasn't hurting, it just felt a bit waterlogged and bassy, if you know what I mean. Now I'm doped up on paracetamol it doesn't hurt either, but it was hurting earlier. What's the best painkiller I can get over the counter? I bet it's going to cause me some grief on Monday. |

In which case, you explain that to NHS direct and you'll get an appointment with an emergency Doctor today (or this evening), they have on site pharmacies with standard anti-biotics and painkillers available immediately.
Failing that, head for your local pharmacist. They know more about drugs than most doctors and will give you the best thing for it. ____________________ Avast! Pirates ahoy!

Thanks for the advice Anna. It's behaving itself at the moment, so I'll see how it goes and if it reverts to it's painful self I'll give NHS Direct a shout. |

ive found the best painkiller for a bad ear infection is codiene, but its only on prescription. i guess the next best thing over the counter is co-codomol.
on a good note though you will more than likely find that the antibiotics will start working noticebaly after a couple of days and you'll soon be fit again |

My ear inf is just going, thank God !
Poor you
Bad timing
Mine are caused by eczema in the ear canals and stuff
It caused an abcess on my ear drum once
That was not nice
I couldn't stand up, sleep, eat or drink, and the vomiting was icky
I would dose yourself up, and if you can manage it, get some of those pressurising ear plugs from the pharmacy
That is what I use
But it depends if you can take the pain of putting it just inside your ear
Good luck

Judging by the feeling in my left ear, I now have an infection in both ears. |

Looks like I'm not going tomorrow. The infection has gotten worse and has seriously affected my co-ordination; I dropped 2 glasses at work last night. Unless by some miracle it's better tomorrow I'll be taking a raincheck! |
