My Repairs Rant ( Westgate Hill - Newcastle )

Hey , I Haven't posted for a while because as of yet i'm still not on the road .

Anyway , it took me a few hours before i decided to write this up as i wasn't too sure how to proceed - for the time being i won't name the name the shop i'm having the work done at but i will say that this is beginning to take the p*** just a bit.

It all started a fortnight ago when i took my VFR caliper to have the piston seals replaced . I took it in on the monday and the guy there said it would be done for thursday and cost approximatley £40 - fair enough i said , i'll ring you thursday.
Rang them up thursday afternoon to be told they hadn't done it yet but would do it tommorow ( friday ) okay i said as i understand the bike shops are fairly busy this time of year.

So rings back on friday to be told , it hasn't been done yet and will now be monday or tuesday - this saddens me as i now i've missed my first bike meet

So yet again i ring back on Monday afternoon to be told - sorry mate , just ordered the seals today it will be ready wedensday ( this week ) .

By now i'm annoyed - considering the seasl should have been ordered last week FFS !

So Wedensday rolls around , rings back - we're doing it now mate it'll be ready for half 4 give me a ring then .
Excellent i think - tommorow i'll be out on my bike !!!!

WRONG !

Rings back at half four for them to say , erm we need the chassis number before we can order the seals
WTF ???? needless to say i wasn't happy that they'd lied to me and now they had to order the seals
So give them the number and they say ring back thursday as they were going to another shop on the Hill that stocked the seals .

Rings back Thursday (yesterday) to be told i'm doing it now mate , ring back about half 2 , should be reday then .

Funny - in the back of mind i new they were lying , but i rang back anyway - guess what , still not ready this time they tell me the seals don't fit and apparently they've tried all VFR seals from 1985 to 1990 and none fit - they're ordering some in and they might be here tommorow .

So , i was at work this morning and my dad rang them to see what was happening - they told him the right seals came in today and they were just fitting them now - and to ring back this afternoon.

So , i gets in from work and lets my dad ring them again - they say , the seals just arrived now and that they're going to do them this afternoon. So my dad asks how much it will cost and they say about £60 - £20 more than originally quoted - so my dad says is there any chance of getting them a bit cheaper due to the time we've waited - to this the bloke at the shop lost his temper basically and said it's not our fault you've had to wait - so i take the phone off my dad to see what's happening , i'm told - kit came today it's £30 plus approximatley £30 labour - i say will it be done today , yes he says - okay i say ring me when it's done !

Now it's 5:30 - the shops closed and guess what - No effin phone call .

Honestly - what the hell should i do in this situation ? If i go down there i expect i'd lose my temper - so far i haven't said a bad word too them and in the past they've always been reliable to fix my scooters , but i've never had this type of problem with anything else before .

What would you do ?

Call round there mate, take your bike somewhere else and dont pay the c*nts. I swear to god they are feking you about and there isnt much summer left so get the bike back, go to a mechanic who isnt a lazy cowboy f*cker. Seriously, your going to be out of pocket and made a fool of by these nobs.

I would of got my bike back the first time I got messed about.

Stick the name of the shop on as many forums as possible, even if it stops one person being messed about it'll be worth it.

Its just your caliper thats there isn't it?

If so, go there ask for it, when they give you it just put it in your pocket and walk out without saying a word. Take it somewhere that you know has a good reputation.

Go down there, ask for your calipers back, and take your business elsewhere. I wouldn't mind there being a delay if there was good reason for it, and they were honest about it.

If they only have your caliper go and ask for it back, check the seals to see if theyve been done. If they refuse to hand back the caliper then inform them you will be contacting the Police and trading standards. Do this on the spot, if they dont give it back there and then then make the call and let it go from there. Do not pay ANY money whatsoever unless the work has been done. If it has then pay a substantially reduced amount.

Once you have received your caliper put the name of the shop up on forums as mentioned.

If they carry out the work i'd refuse to pay full price. They messed you around for a week saying work was been carried out when they didnt have the parts.

For them to kick off at you for bring that up is out of order.

Wonder if its one of the big 2 shops up there? Can't imagine it is for the labour rate your paying

Should've asked me. I charge £20 per piston and seal set on a standard rate so a 2 piston caliper is £40 and not only do you get new seals but new pistons as well. You pay postage.

It wasn't Kens , no - i will name & shame AFTER i get it back - they have until tommorow to come up with the goods otherwise i will do as above .

Sickpup - i'll take you up on that offer mate ! - even if this one gets sorted i'll have the LHS and Rear done from you if that's okay .

Worst part for them is , i was going to get my MOT & a full service after they'd done the caliper - they've now just lost themselves around £300

Which VFR is it?

The NC21/24 are listed but the NC30 isn't. Regardless of that all honda's from this era used either 26x31 or 27x31 pistons and seals so there should only be 1 possible seal set 31mm. Unless you have some weird calipers on yours that is.

Yes people I am very sad.

I have found that if a brake piston puller is used to remove the pistons you generally find that you don't need new pistons or seals just a good clean out.

It's the NC24 mate - 1987 model - the calipers are the standard Nissin ones - 2 front , 1 rear .
