I was sent the following by a friend.

Has anyone else seen this before? Have you tried any of the amazing things your mobile phone can do?

Being somewhat sceptical I found it amusing but there's just a small part of me that wants to have a go!

THINGS YOU NEVER KNEW YOUR MOBILE PHONE COULD DO

There are a few things that can be done in times of grave emergencies.

Your mobile phone can actually be a life saver or an emergency tool for survival.

Check out the things that you can do with it: -

How to disable a STOLEN mobile phone?
To check your Mobile phone's serial number, key in the following digits on your phone:
* # 0 6 #

A 15 digit code will appear on the screen. This number is unique to
your handset. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe. When your phone gets stolen, you can phone your service provider and give them this code. They will then be able to block your handset so even if the thief changes the SIM card, your phone will be totally useless.

You probably won't get your phone back, but at least you know that whoever stole it can't use/sell it either.
If everybody does this, there would be no point in people stealing
mobile phones.

*EMERGENCY*

The Emergency Number worldwide for **Mobile** is 112.*
If you find yourself out of coverage area of your mobile network
and there is an emergency, dial 112 and the mobile will search any existing network to establish the emergency number for you, and interestingly this number 112 can be dialed even if the keypad is
locked.

*Have you locked your keys in the car?
Does you car have remote keys?*

This may come in handy someday. Good reason to own a cell phone:
If you lock your keys in the car and the spare keys are at home, call
someone at home on their cell phone from your cell phone.

Hold your cell phone about a foot from your car door and have the person at your home press the unlock button, holding it near the mobile phone on their end. Your car will unlock.
Saves someone from having to drive your keys to you.
Distance is no object. You could be hundreds of miles away, and if you can reach someone who has the other "remote" for your car, you can unlock the doors (or the trunk).

Hidden Battery power

Imagine your cell battery is very low , you are expecting an important call and you don't have a charger. Nokia instrument comes with a reserve battery.
To activate, press the keys *3370# Your phone will restart with this reserve and the instrument will show a 50% increase in battery.

This reserve will get charged when you charge your phone next time.

Most of it is pretty standard stuff.

The *#06# is a standard code amongst GSM handsets

The 112 code is correct, however you will need a signal.

The Car unlocking one is a myth as far as I know, but did you know you can put your remote fob against your head and increase the range.

All the *3370# code does on Nokia phones is decrease the call quality by enabling HCR, theoretically it would extend the battery by a bit, but not much.

Plus, if your car is a remote unlocking one, how are you going to leave it at home? You need to unlock it and then you take it with you!

112 is just the international version of 999/911, and can be called from any phone regardlesss of whether its a mobile or landline. However if you dont have a signal on your mobile then you're not calling anyone!

What if the thief has already changed the sim card, can the phone still be blocked?

The phone will still be barred as it's IMEI number will be blacklisted.

Oh good, cos I lost my phone last week. So I just phone up my service provider and give them the IMEI and it will be barred? Fantastic!

Just to clarify; stolen phone has had sim changed already. Then I call service provider and give them IMEI number (this is after the thief has already changed the sim). Can service provider then block the phone when it has a different sim inside it?

Sorry if it is a dumb question! Laughing

If its on the same network yes as the operators system looks for the IMEI number on its network and then can disable the phone.

999 and 112 can be called regardles of coverage on newer phones as it will automatically choose the strongest signal regardless of network to make the call.

The Car remote is laughable, Phones cannot transmit other radio waves other thean the ones they are locked to.

The battery one is a half truth, Cant remember the make but there was one phone you could enter the code and it reduced the power to the transmitter circuit, therefor lengthening the life of the battery. Its was on the Estato site somewhere.

But with the car one, it makes no difference even if it did work. If someone has lost their car keys but the spare remote can open it over the phone to stop someone having to bring the spares to you, what are you going to do then? Just sit in the car forever? I'm sure mobile phones can't start cars too!!!!

(edit) Ok, so I just noticed it said if you locked your keys in the car. I stand corrected with that one!!

True, but the more stolen phones that get blocked then the less customers these scumbags will get.

Also it gives me peace of mind knowing that no one can now use my phone.

They can send blocked phones overseas and they will work (for the time being. likely that there will be a global database sometime)

Not really, I got hold of a Sharp GX20 which had been blocked (given to me for free), I sold it to a school friend for £20 who took it to another friend, who I think cloned the IMEI number with some complicated computer trickery stuff, and the phone worked fine.

There's a real market on eBay for blocked phones. If you've got the equipment and the know-how, you buy them blocked on the cheap, and then sell them on as working phones.
