Why is a wheelie called a minger though? I can't see the connection. I thought a minger was slang for an ugly person

"Lofting a minger" is, I believe, the correct term.

I believe it to be a 'fast bikes' ism.

Back in the day, when men were real men, women were real women, and small furry creatures from Alpha Centauri were REAL small furry creatures from Alpha Centauri...

Fast bikes was an independent magazine, published by an independent publisher on a shoestring. They used to tell it like it is.

Then the founding editor left. And it got bought by a big publisher.

Then it got worse than Superbike.

Both the eds of Fast Bikes and Superbike don't (afaik) come from a motorcycling background. (superbike ed had to do his DAS after he got the job... He used to be the ed of a mountain biking mag afaik)

Anyway I digress...

Fast bikes, back in the day used to always refer to looong high gear wheelies as mingers. Not really sure how it came about, perhaps due to the sloppiness of the execution. Either way "5th gear minger" is a fast-bikes ism for a long 5th gear wheelie. Which has caught on with other mags.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.
