high mileage

sorry if this has been done before. Just wondering, when buying a car I would consider anything over 100k to be high mileage and anything under that , regulalry serviced , to be ok. At what figure would a bike be considered high mileage and does it vary for type eg 2t, 4t, big twins ?

high mileage is anything above the average
see what the typical mileage is for that bike of that age (ebay is good for this) and then you will know what is high compared to the average

Some bikes are designed for high mileage like pan europeans, others may not be worth replacing all the bits that will wear out unless you can do it yourself.

that was what I was after really Colin at what age is each type of bike on the border line of being a big job to do ? Some kind of ball park figure.

it will depend on the bike and i dont really know, but with sports 600s i think they need quite a bit of stuff doing by 20k miles i dont know details

sports bikes have to suffer abuse, so a higher mileage one that hasnt had a hard life may be a better buy (wheelies, dump clutch pullaways etc)

to really know, you would need the workshop manual of each bike and see what needs doing when

you can download these for about £5 a time or someone might send you one

Depends on the engine and the bike plus its age.

But at a rought esimate l would consinder these high mileage,


Two-strokes: 20-30k+

Four-stroke singles 30-40k+

Four-stroke twin 40-50k+

Four-stroke triple/four 50-70k+



There are bikes like the NTV,s/CX500/BMW,s etc that are know to do 100-150k+ with no problems, its best to look into what other bikes have done and read varoius reviews by owners.

It really matters more about the bike's service history, and specifically the kind of bike that it is. Rather than saying an IL4 is high mileage after xxxxx miles, you need to think about the particular bike in question.
A high revving sportsbike, which has been thrashed every day of its life for long distance commuting, rain or shine, that has hardly ever been serviced and only loooked after when bits fell off will be knackered in much less miles than a tourer, which was used every summer to go around europe on motorways, religiously mantained and cared for by one loving owner all its life. those 2 are fairly polar opposites and will definitely be knackered at different mileages, it also matters a great deal about the engine in question, how bulletproof they are.

My zephyr has 19k on it I think (something like that), my GPz has 47k on it but Ive replaced practically everything that wears. The GPz engine is now much better despite being higher mileage.

What is "high mileage" is a difficult question, there are more factors you need to look into than just the number.

Mine has done almost 18k
When we weas buying we took into account the milage from the word go. But because this was so cheap we didnt mind.
How much would an engine rebuild cost roughly.
I know last owner did barrell, pistons,gasket rings, top end bearing.
