There are plans for a new four lane motorway, and instead of just adding one more lane. The goverment plans to make all the other lanes shorter by 6inch, witch will make it impossible to filter the traffic when it grinds to a hault as it alwayz does! it will also make it alot more dangerous riding on the motorways in general.

Nah it'll never happen.

When they take the width of the lanes down to 6'-6" like they seem to do in road works with the pretty fluroescent markers, they always impose a speed limit fo 40 or something.

I can't see it happening.

The Conservatives were promising to widen every road in the country if they got into power! Laughing

They're probably just testing the waters, all these sensationalist 'they're forcing through a dodgy bill' stories never amount to anything.

6 inches off three lanes, 4 if you include the hard shoulder, only gives you 2 feet. Not enough room for a cycle lane. There must be more to it than that.

i'd heard (albeit a while back) that they were thinking of using the hard shoulder during peak times to add an extra lane.

Not sure what happened to the idea though..

I don't want to offend, but doesn't this sound like the type of sensationalist MCN stuff that I/we normally try to avoid ??
ie. bikers lives being more restricted or more difficult as a result of plans that may or may not happen.

Maybe I'm just becoming more cynical as I get older Rolling Eyes

On the plus side, no-one will be able to take trucks or caravans on the motorways any more...

I refer the honourable gentlemen to:

https://www.highways.gov.uk/knowledge/11689.aspx

It's most definitely true. Note that a lot of the extra room is going to be found by making the central reserve a hell of a lot narrower - I hope their new "restraint system" is up to the job...

Wonder what the "slow lane" that they refer to is? They've spent long enough in the past saying that there is no such thing as a "fast lane", just "overtaking lanes".

Erm, 6 inches off a lane I doubt is going to make it /massively/ more difficult to filter.

I'm guessing you don't live near London Smile.
