heard some blokes down the pub talking about this. Apparently adding very small amounts on Acetone in with your petrol increases your mpg.

Anyone else heard of doing this?

It will make it run slightly lean. The more acetone, the leaner it gets.

Acetone is also very good at dissolving gasket material and seals of all types (especially the ones round the float chamber of motorcycle carburettors).

All in all, not a good idea.

Hi I run it in my van, usually around 10ml to every litre of fuel. But this is on a diesel, not sure wether I'd trust it in a petrol engine mind!

Cheers
Paul

You see, this is where your brain should have cut in and told you that they were talking utter drivel.

Most things you hear 'down the pub' usually turn out to be utter drivel.

Acetone has less energy per unit volume than diesel or petrol, so it'd be impossible to get more energy (miles) per gallon than on regular fuel without running a specially designed engine, dedicated to the combustion characteristics of acetone. Not to mention the corrosive nature of the byproducts of acetone combustion. If it has Any small positive effect, it's probably down to it's "cleaning" attributes, which quite posibly also involve removing thin layers of your engine from the inside out.
