does anyone know if those locks you can get that use a round / octaganol key (camlock I believe they are called) are more prone to or better at warding off barrel attacks to a padlock compared to a normal key padlock? They just look abit iffy to me not sure why,

these things:

The padlock I was looking at was abit like this but thicker than this one:

The only thing I was concerned with really was other round keys fitting the lock if jammed up their with a hammer?

AFAIK *most* circular keys like that are being phased out since the biro incident.

I've got a titan disc lock which uses a round key. It came with the bike. I think it might be one of the ones that you can supposedly open with a biro. Came down to the bike today to find a Varadero sat next to it with the same lock but a different name stuck on it. Was tempted to test how rubbish they are by using my key.

I think they're good enough, depends on your bike. Anything to stop someone walking up and pushing the bike away is good, there's not alot you can do about more professional thieves.

Rick.

The oxford titan was the one they tested it on.

They gave out loads of free ones a whileback from places like M&P, I got one.

They now have the long rectangular key with random indents in it.

not all Tubular pin tumbler locks can be opened that way, it only affected a realtivell small set from a particular manufacturer, that oxford and some other security people used. Ther was a LOT of scaremongering surroudning the issue, stating that "oh every lock we have can be opened with a pen" but it was bollx.

Tubular Pin Tumbler locks, are far more secure than traditional Pin Tumbler locks (like yale keyed items etc), which can be picked with basic tools.

Disk Tumbler Locks: Some high security use round disk tumblers that are rotated into position by a specially designed key bitted with angled cuts corresponding to each tumbler. These locks are unusual in not requiring springs on the individual tumblers and are therefore especially well suited to outdoor use under extreme conditions.Disk tumbler cylinders are used primarily for padlocks situated in harsh environments. They require special picking tools to manipulate the tumblers and apply torque.
