Running rich how much damage ?

Hey, well i fitted a 70cc kit to my scooter today as the old standard 50cc head blew, anyway i upped the jet and filter but its running rich its a bit smokey, will this do damage as im scared to ride it incase it goes bang

any help would be great guys

Depends how rich, can't you just lean if up my twisting screws?

Rich running can wash the bores causing greater bore/piston wear. That's on a 4 stroke though unsure about a 2 stroke.

It would probably foul the plug before it got to the that stage thought.

I cant see any smoke, how do you know it's rich, if its way too rich it'll be unrideable.

the plugs gone from black to brown but it bogs a little when pulling off and if let below half throttle it spluts i think i need to move the needle up on the cable not sure tho

Is it ok at high revs on full throttle?

Brown is good.

You may need to drop your needle as it will splutter if too rich (if you can) or come down a size on the main. I'm not responsible for it seizing though.

full throttle is fine, im going to up the oil though so it smokes all the time but just a little to make sure it gets plenty of oil and 70 kits are fun when they work

Rich is better than lean!

In a very basic way idle is controlled by the idle jet and mixture screw, part throttle is the needle and the main jet is full throttle so if you think its rich on part throttle then you need to drop the needle a bit, you might need some small washers to get it just right.

Bit old fashioned but a colortune can help you diagnose some problems with jetting, costs about £20.

Another option is a plug chop. Ride the scooter for a couple of miles at a constant throttle positon. Kill the bike without adjusting the throttle and pull over, take the plug out and check the colour. Do this at different speeds to get a complete picture of whats going on.

wasnt gonna get silly your ment to give it more oil so ill see and look at one of those kits halfords do for bikes to check but it turned a old screwed spark plug that was black to sexy chocolate colour but starter seems to struggle atm as old piston had no compression you could start it with you little finger lol

Probably not too bad then, although you really want the plug to be a pale brownish colour. More your caramac, rather than curly wurly.

if its ok at full throttle bug bogs low down, try LOWERING your needle, this will lean things up a bit at the bottom end. Failing that try the next smallest main jet.
