At a BBQ last night, a couple of people made me giggle because of how scared they are of fire, it got me thinking….
When I was a lad (I love saying that now), football never interested me, never fancied dancing around the grass for an hour being kicked in the shins by a fat lad, I’d rather be in the woods or at home in the garden burning something.
My old man taught me how to use matches, blow torches etc safely, other things followed as a result of being outdoors all the time, as he was a builder I used to go on site occasionally and start bonfires for stuff cut down or thrown away.
He taught me how to set one up, light it for the best results and how to extinguish it properly afterwards. I look back now and realise what a good thing it was learning about fire, because I understand it, I understand which fires are potentially lethal, what part of the flame can burn you quicker than others.
To understand fire is like understanding the sea I guess while sailing, you have to know the results of actions you take with something that is fairly unpredictable.
I know a dozen people who would most likely kill themselves if they were asked to start a controlled fire or perhaps survive somewhere having to create a fire from nothing.
I witnessed something a few years back that shocked me, at my cousins birthday, his mum got their one and only lighter from the drawer (all non smokers) and she attempted to light the candles, I really thought she was taking the piss at first, she’d flick the lighter and when it sparked or lit she’d try and hold it away so it wouldn’t burn her, and she’d let go of the gas switch far too quickly.
I realise schools would be a stupid place to teach about how to understand fire because of the supervision, but I recall that most lessons involving talks on fire were painfully basic, I think learning how to put a chip pan fire out or a wood fire is not the be all and end all to understanding fire.
