This article in the telegraph

A letter lifted from another forum to the telepgaph which sums it up so well

Quote:

The article by Mr Edwards cannot be allowed to go unchallenged. He is obviously starting from the point of view that speed causes all accidents. If we look at the facts in his article (such as they are) a very different picture emerges, one which tallies with the Transport Research Laboratory paper TRL 323.

1. Natasha has an accident because another car approaches from behind with its headlights on full beam. Is speed the cause or panic/bad driving (on her part) ?
2. Natasha drives along at 40mph and a car crosses a double white line and hits her. Cause - speed or bad driving (this time on the part of the other driver) ? As for the claim by the policeman that had she been driving at the 'permitted' 60mph she would have been killed, this is pure speculation. Furthermore implying that you can drive at the speed limit is just stupid - speed should be appropriate. Had she actually been driving at 60mph the accident would never have happened, as she would have been well past the point at which the other car crossed the white lines (think about it).
3. Her best friend, Jilly, pulls out at a T junction and kills an oncoming motorcyclist - a prime example of terrrible driving on her part.
4. Another friend has her jaw 'shattered' (not broken, note) by a 'speeding' lorry. Unless the exact circumstances are set out this is nothing more than worthless hearsay.
5. His parked car is written off by a pensioner. Surely it takes pretty bad driving to hit a stationary vehicle, and so speed yet again is irrelevant.

So, of the five examples given, speed is the definite cause of exactly - none. TRL 323 - the only large-scale study ever carried out into the causation of accidents - shows that excessive speed is a factor in only 7% of accidents (and this includes speeds below the speed limits!).

The major causes of driving accidents are bad driving, carelessness and bad road engineering. These are not such easy problems to address, not as simplistic and politically correct as to blame 'speeding', but the facts prove it.

By all means let us have an open debate, but based on facts, not fiction.

Yours faithfully,

as always tho, and something missed from the letter...

those that speed, who habitually break the limit, are breaking the limit, simple as that.. will changing the limit make them, magically, adhere to it? I doubt it..

when have facts ever made the government listen ?,

they say we know best , end of get los until the next election , where you still won't matter unless you are in a marginal seat, which I am not since I live in a rock solid labour area due to the fact that 80%+ of the population are dole chav scum which get more on the dole than the 20% working folks.

Out of the thousands that die on the roads today the ones that are constantly on the news etc are the ones where the speed factor is blatantly obvious, or the new on is the mobile phone. But dangerous driving comes from just being a cock on the road.

On a wide road from Cheltenham I was stopped doing 42mph in a 30 late at night, the copper told me it was a “Ridiculous speed” TBH it would be if there was a carnival on but there was no one on the road, if a child ran out in front of me, that’s nothing to do with me travelling fast. So on the motorway, 75-80mph must be just asking to die. Thinking I think not….

Bad, careless driving is the main cause, not paying attention, tiredness etc, also I’d say that when car's collide, whether it's head on, clipping and spinning, how the fuck can you calculate the odds that certain parts of the car will do certain things.

People have died from 30mph crashes with objects, I saw video once of a guy flung from his car doing over 80mph after careering off onto a motorway embankment, he was dazed, but he didn’t have a scratch on him.
The odds are probably good on surviving a 30mph crash in a modern day car, but the whole country would loose income because people are doodling to and from places if we all travelled at that speed.

I think 50mph is good a as a top speed in the country, but it wont make the blind bit of difference to some people, it’s just another sign.

define "the country" tho...

the A428 has an NSL on it.. it's a relatively wide, and fast single carriage way road, with sweeping bends that can be taken comfortably and (relatively) safely at 'silly-speeds'..

that being said, it's also a very busy road, being one of the main links from Cambridge to the A1 and bedfordshire. For that road to be run at 50mph would be ludicrous..

If, for example, you're talking about narrow, almost single-track/goat-track roads with poor visibility, then yes, reduce the speeds there.

However, bear in mind that the council already HAVE the power to reduce the speeds in those ares with posted limits. I know I take more notice of a posted limit, than of the NSL for any length of time. a posted limit, a change in the speed required makes you think "why" is it lowered..

I don't see what's wrong with the current limits, indeed, the upper limits should be raised imho, but equally, I think councils should use posted limits, rather than be arguing for a lower, blanket limit that will be ignored anyway.

Oh FFS, role out the 40mph patrol!!

Have they ever thought that them driving at 40mph could possibly cause problems!!, why you ask!, go take adriving test and do 40 in a 60 for no reason, see if you pass!.

Its a fact of life you get frustrated by these type of drivers, and its a fact of life that people will try afew silly overtakes, they wind you up.

The worst drivers are the 40mph ones, 40 in a 60, 40 on the motorway(if they have the confidence to use them), and 40 in a 30 oh yes they love that one.

I've overtoke a car in a 60limit as it was doing 40ish, then the roads went to a 30limit, i actually dropped to 30, and he overtoke me and I got a discusted look from them, and of they went at 40 through a built up area.

Surely these are all just completely arbitrary figures? I know (and you'll know) plenty of roads where you could kill yourself at 50. And 40. And so on.

Quite possibly would. Studies of increased speed limits have found that it can reduce traffic speeds. Theory is that if a speed limit is seen to be vaguely sensible people will go to some effort to keep to it. Make the limit lower and they just ignore it totally.

All the best

how true theres this hill that can easily change to 40 even 50 , since there is only one side road and the other side is open grass for 500 metres then a small hill downwards.

there are houses about 25 metres to the left (going down the hill) , and the road can fit 4 HGVs side by side (as it was used to transport a huge chunk of machinery that required 2 HGVs lashed together but wider than 3 HGVs and other HGVs the other way could fit easily.

but its 30mph and there are ALWAYS camera vans there. few people take notice since its unrealistically low
