Bike not used for a year

I haven't usd my CBR for almost a year now ( don't flame me;)) and I want to, I suppose, restore it so i can sell it.

I removed all the plastics as they need work doing, I'm not capable of doing it myself, such as scrapes and one broken bit (which i still have)

First question is does anyone know of cheap bodywork shop that'll do bike in the Slough, area bear in mind I cannot ride it.

Second is what needs to be done if it hasn't been used for a while i.e. emtpy petrol tank, oil. What sort of things can I do safely in the garage.

The battery is dead so i haven't even tried to fire it up, bit scared to honestly.

If you can't do the work yourself, it's very unlikely the increased selling price will actually cover the cost of any resoration that is required.

If you do the work yourself, you might just break even on it.

OK when I said i wasn't capable I may have jumped of the gun a bit. I probably meant it might not look excellent but it should look better. So I suppose the main thing is getting it running.

All depends on who you think you'll be selling it to. If I turned up and spotted that the bike had been recently and badly tarted up, I'd run a mile. If it was "as is", I'd consider making a (admittedly low) offer on it.

Other people would, of course, approach the situation differently.

Try charging the battery, but sounds like it has been sat discharged for best part of a year, so it'll be borked. You are already into it for the price of a new one.

I'd advise you for now just to get a car battery and some jump leads to give it a try. Don't worry just now about the petrol - if it's been kept somewhere dry the petrol may still be ok.

If it won't start we can take it from there.

Edit - by the way, actually disconnect the old battery from the bike if you are going to jump it. You don't want a knackered battery in there doing more harm than good.

Well I can get a bike battery for 20 quid apparently (I'll have to check that though)

I was just worried that the petrol that has been sat there would bugger it.

Also the bike has salty deposits Wink

on the metal work what is it? It's been garaged up.

Well I know I wont get what i paid for it back so it's more of when it works then I'll flog it.

I think the whole petrol going off thing is overrated. But it can happen. More often, water gets into it, it emulsifies and clogs everything up.

Your salty deposits are corrosion. Probably brought on by salt Smile

Did you wash it before you threw it into the back of the garage?

Best cost/benefit scenario is get it running and put an MOT on it, sell it as a hack.

Nope, no washing oops.

It has a KN filter and I have an non road Micron exhaust (and th original for mot) it passed its MOT last time no problem just the bodywork needs doing and a service.

At the very least you should squirt some WD40 down the sparkplug holes prior to trying to turning it over.
Petrol will be fine if it's only been a year, a neighbour recently sold an Aprillia Falco that had been sat covered up in his garden for at least 2 years if not nearer 3, it started and ran surprisingly, the buyer rode it away.

Bear in mind my cbr is (well should be) silver.

1. Mine doesn't have a grab rail and the panel from this view has a hole where it should be.

2. On the other side where the fuel switch is, it has snapped off bit as in the bit that goes in the grommet decided to stay put along with a nice piece of the panel while removing one day.

3. A number of chips and gouges

4. Cracked at the screw because i didn't see the other screws holding it on.

5. Where I dropped it nice cracks and scrapes

6. Case is all scratched to buggery

7. Not pictured, metal work is so grubby you wouldn't think it were silver, I rubbed the brake casing the other day with a small wire brush to see what would happen and to my surpise they are gold not black as I have assumed for two years.

Can I just point out that Honda didn't need to use so many different sized bolts and screws.
