Hi,

Seen another post on hear but i didn't seem too clear to me Embarassed

When you are doing the gears & its 1 down, 4 up. Say you start in Neutral & knock down to 1st, would you need to knock it up twice or once to get to 2nd? Unsure & don't wanna make a complete prat of myself lol

nocking the gears up once will get it into 2nd from first Thumbs Up

as neutral is half way between, you'll know if you've accidentaly kickd it into neutral as your bike will just not respond

Neutral is half way between 1st and second so basically you go up once and ur in second, and when you need neutral you push it up a little bit. Wink

You press down on the lever to change into first.

To change into second, lift the lever with your toe firmly and positively all the way to the top of its travel in one smooth movement. This change goes 'via' neutral. 'knocking' into second gear is a good way to accidentally change into neutral.

To change into neutral from first, you gently lift the lever until you feel it change then stop lifting.

Yes, you can change from second into neutral BUT different bikes vary as to how easy this is. Generally speaking it is easier to change up from first but the more you do it, the easier it gets.

That said, I've had some (older) bikes that refuse to change into neutral at all while the bike is stationary, some will change more easily from second, some will change more easily from first.

Many modern bikes have a 'neutral finder mechanism' that makes it virtually impossable to change into anything other than neutral from first gear while stationary.

So, upshot is, you just have to get used to your own bike. If you are in second and want neutral, try for it. If you don't hit it, you are now in first and it should be easy from there.

Also worth noting that it is always easier to shift into neutral while the bike is still moving forwards slightly, although this may not be what instructors are looking for.

Yeah you can go into neutral from either 1st or 2nd. It's just a gentle tap instead of a firm movement.
