What sort of bike is it?

I have had starter cluthces break in the past, and they can sound like that. The rattle coming from the clutch not fully disengaging after the motor fires. I have also had the starter motor idler gears break up. Old aircooled Kwaks had a habit of doing this....and it's a hell of a job to strip down as well.

There may be other things going on here though.....

The bike was playing up and had to be bump started????

The bike died on you when you got home????

I take it that is not normal for the bike....

Sounds to me as though there could be something more serious going on. If something major has broken, there could be all sorts of metallic debris in the sump/gearbox... so do some careful checking before you try to fire it up again!
