I'm just wondering what these markings mean, i've searched on the web but it just tells me the name, what are they for?

They are present to try and separate the 2 lanes of traffic, often found along roads that may have had its fair share of RTA's or the likelyhood of dangerous overtaking.

Basically the rule is that you may use areas of road painted with diagonal lines to overtake slow traffic, as long as the border is broken rather than solid and as long as it's safe to do so.
