hi,
ive been thinking about how i could get myself a cheap first bike, i really like the idea of a cheap 600 sports, because of the more advanced brakes and suspension (i wont be able to access the heady power of the engine until the 33bhp restriction is over) so i was thinking...
would it be a valid and/or worthwhile idea to get a 600 sports thats been dropped, with fairing damage etc. without it being to badly damaged and having it repaired. The reason i say this is because i know of two paint shops locally (car paintshops..) that i get on really well with, and would do work on the cheap for me if i slipped them a couple of pints and offered my electrical expertise Cool and i would do the prep work myself in the workshop, and all the mechanical stuff i can do aswell...
so is anything missing from my plan? and are car paints going to work on fairings? lol
cheers
dan Dance!

Worth a go, plenty of bargains to be had that are just a bit cosmetically challenged.

When it's time to sell, some people will be freaked out by anything vaguely 'respray' but if you got it cheap in the first place, it's not really a problem.

i dont really fancy building it from scratch if u get what i mean, but repair the fairings, new bars ends, new gear selector... simple stuff really. but having it in bits would offer me the ideal chance to upgrade the odd hidden bits and to fit the restrictors...
Ive seen the odd later ninetys 600 go on eBay for less than a grand, the old GSXR600s, ZX-6Rs are the most popular on there...
any other comments would be appriciated

If i were you i'd get on to breakers yards, a Cat c or Cat d write off would be right up your alley Thumbs Up most are written off because of fairings, which are very easily repaired. All you need is a V62 to apply for a log book, then an MOT and you're ready to roll.

If you've got time to really work on it, a decent strip down (removing engine/gearbox etc...) followed by a good clean and a rebuild with new bushes bearings and seals here and there could add a bit of value to the resale price, not to mention the peace of mind that comes with it. If you've got the know how, the time and the inclination, i'd say strip it as far as possible.

If that's too much hassle then just do the easily seen bits and you should be ok, and it'll be a dirt cheap job Thumbs Up

does anyone know where i'd stand with insurance though, as its going to be my first bike. Anyone know of any good bike breakers in the southeast then? or anywhere really? i dont mind traveling to have a look at a bike and i have access to a big enough van....

Im thinking an old zx-6r sprayed in subaru pro-drive blue with white decals or sprayed orange and white...

Remeber, you don't actually need brand new looking fairings to use the bike. Infact, you'll find when you're riding your bike you don't even look at the fairings! Smile.

So you will get some money off for a bike in that sort of condition, but not as much as one needing more mechanical work.

If it's your first bike, I'd probably suggest not getting fairings painted up initially - get them fixed and useable, then ride the bike for a bit.

There's plenty of things that can catch new riders out and see bikes being dropped.

I was going to spend time and money on new fairings but at the end of the day, theres more important things to spend the money and effoct on 1st.

You will drop the bike at some stage too, so its not abad thing to wait Wink

yeh thats what i was planning anyway.
get the bike/sort the fairings, maybe just get them sprayed in a cheap colour for the first year or so, so that if i do drop it its not so much of a bummer. then when i get my confidence up get the fairings really sorted and sprayed and decaled up

I would go for it, but why bother with repairing fairings when you can turn it into a street fighter?
