PostPosted: 20:52 - 13 Aug 2006    Post subject: Eager to ride!! Reply with quote

Hi all!

I'm soon turning 17 and am going to take my full test on a 125. I've heard after two years I can ride anything as long as the bike is restricted to 33bhp. Is this true?

I am hoping to get a Ninja ZX-6R when this time comes. Is it legal to ride a restricted Ninja 600 after this two year period?

Many thanks

after your A2 test, get on the restricted ninja.... ride about for two years.... take restrictors out.... fly about for the rest of ur life....
thats what the law says but there is nothing to stop u leaving the restrictors in for more than two years, or illegally taking them out. there are a few threads about removing restrictors before your times up so look about and im sure ull find some..

Thanks a lot dan! Very Happy

Do you have any idea how much restrictors cost? Are they universal or model specific?

restrictors are bike specific and usually come from a company called FI international https://www.fiinternational.com/
and can cost anywhere up to £200 fitted. but are usually £100-150.
however these do count as a "modification" on your insurance

yeah you could ride any bike as long as its no more than 33bhp, you can get a kit to restrict a blackbird if you wanted to. one thing you need to remember is that if you take the restrictor off then you will be riding without a valid licence which also means no insurance etc

Don't know at the moment to be honest. I've always liked the prospect of having a decent motorbike (didn't bother with 50cc peds) relatively soon. But it'll probs be like a 2000 kinda time. Any 600 will do really, I like the R6 and GSX-R too.

your in the same boat as me then by the sounds of it... just waiting for my 17th and the A2 test... lol
Put i plan to get a dropped 600 and repair it, should work out cheaper as alot of 600 sports are like £2000 which is a bit... well expensive considering im saving for a gab year in newzealand.... lol

The restriction period is for the 2 years after passing your test, then when the two years are up (when your 19, if you do your test when you are 17) you can ride anything.

What so I can ride a restricted 600 once I've passed my test at 17?

I copied this off the DVLA website just now under 'Category A' motorcycle license...

"A solo motorcycle over 120cc but not more than 125cc, capable of 100kph. A test pass on a motorcycle meeting this specification restricts entitlement to riding a motorcycle with a power output not exceeding 25kW (33bhp) for two years."

The bit that says "restricts entitlement to riding a motorcycle with a power output not exceeding 25kW (33bhp) for two years" gives me the impression that once passed, you are restricted from actually riding a restricted 600 for two years, not to actually ride one for two years after passing Confused

Here's the link:
https://dvla.gov.uk/drivers/minimum_test_vehicles.htm

Thoughts anyone?

"You pass your test at 17, ride restricted to 33bhp for two years, then you can ride full power...trust me"

By 'test' i don't mean the CBT.
You need to do a CBT and an A2 test.

Dude you're right!! Thanks man, just found this on BSM:

Complete CBT
Age 16: entitled to ride a bike/scooter of no more than 49cc (restricted to 30mph)
Age 17+: entitled to ride a bike/scooter up to 125cc (restricted to 14.6bhp)
NB: CBT certificate is only valid for 2 years.

Nice!! Looks like I could be on a nice bike sooner than I thought Very Happy

So what else do I need to do on top of the CBT to be entitled to ride restricted?

Fair enough, but personally i just know i would'nt be able to stand riding a 33bhp 600cc sportsbike for 2 years. I don't condone people who take out their bikes restrictors either really. For me i would buy one or a series of bikes under 33bhp and enjoy riding the wheels off them for 2years. I passed my DAS test and still ended up on a sub 33bhp bike anyway, due to not being able to insure the kind of machine i wanted at the time. TBH though, the KMX200, CG125, and TZR250 which were the bikes i owned for 2 years, were some of the best and most fun times ive ever had on two wheels! I loved my ZX6R when i could finally afford it, but the impression that my first bike made on me (KMX200) was such that 2years ago i had to buy another one!

All im saying is don't be in too big a hurry after passing your test, to get onto bigger larger cc bikes, unless you can afford to regardless, or want a less than thrilling riding/ownership experience, which is what a 33bhp sports 600 would give you IMO!

Thanks for that Steve. I've been reading loads of opinions on the forum today and I probably will consider a smaller bike. What else on top of the CBT do I have to do though to be entitled to ride bikes larger than 125?

Now i'm no expert on this.. infact i'm below newb level since i haven't even done my CBT yet, but i'm pretty sure you are misunderstanding it.

To put things clearly. (at aged 17)

Completing your CBT entitles you to ride a bike up to 125cc with L Plates. (14.6bhp max).

Completing your theory test and A2 restricted test entitles you to ride a bike upto a maximum of 33bhp. This includes any bike restricted to 33bhp (so a 600cc bike restricted to 33bhp is fine). No L Plates are required.

After 2 years have passed since you took the A2 restricted test, you will get the restriction removed completly, thus allowing you to ride any bike without restriction.

Hey, it sounds like your getting loads of advice on this topic but if you read the thread about getting the license in the newbi bikers bit you will get all the info and more.

I sat and had a gander earlier this week and didn't get to finish it as there is so much stuff for us L plate warriors.

I myself am really into the cruiser style bikes and am looking at the different 125 versions out there, gonna get one of them and then just ride around for a few years getting the experience of the road needed for when i get the massive Triumph Rocket 3 (2400cc). After all whats the point in getting a huge powered bike if you don't understand the roads you'll be using it on in the first place.

Another point to think about is the first slide on the tarmac. a 125 will be much cheaper to replace than a high powered beast. In my experience and from what i've read on here, it does not matter what size bike you are on as bikers are a friendly bunch of people. Very Happy
