What To Do With A GPX600R

Hi all,

I have a '95 Kawasaki GPX600R that went down the road about a year ago. I've been paid out so it owes me nothing.

Basically, all the plastic is knackered. Not to the point of it being unrideable, but it looks really scruffy with cracks and scratches and bits of plastic missing. (Like it ain't ugly enough in good nick!). All it needs is indicators to get it MOT'd though.

I was thinking of making it naked and riding it as such, but I can't as the tank is shaped around the plastic, and that seat.......My God, that seat.

Does anyone know what seat, tank, front and rear ends will fit on the bike, or would I be better off just breaking it? There is no point making it look new again with GPX panels as it has been written off and is probably worth £00 all up and together with MOT

It rides straight and fine. It only has 8,000 miles on it! If I can make it into a half decent machine without throwing loads of money at it, it would be good to play on, and as a spare bike. (I sold my car on Saturday).

As I type this, I think to myself, break it, use the money to buy the spare bike. Then I think the money will come in dribs and drabs and I'll never really see it as it will just get lost in the paypal account with all the other dribs and drabs.

What would you lot do? I'm too undecided.

Tatters, you're only down the road. Would you still want it after I teach myself to wheelie etc?

This was what I had in mind with putting it on the road as a spare bike. My day to day bike is a piece of crap judging by the standard of the pics I see here, but at least it doesn't have bashed fairings etc.

I'm going away Wednesday for a couple of weeks, I'll give you a shout when I return. You might want to come round and see it. It does have a problem though. The fuel pisses out of the air filter box if it isn't revving high (I think stuck floats as it was standing from July '05 until May '06). I rode it to Bournemouth and discovered this when I stopped at the services for a pee. I was going to Bournemouth to pick up a car, and was leaving the bike there anyway. Until yesterday, that is, when I picked it up in my van. Hence it being in my mind (and my garage)

Yep, good get out clause. And you can get classic insurance .

There are odd rules / interpretations of rules concerning indicator switches if the indicators are not fitted.

Sounds like a clear case of making it into a streetfighter ratbike.

Buy the cheapest headlight/indicator cowl you can find. (usually about £25) fit straight bars, slap on some matt black paint and rag the arse off it.

Ha I saw a GPZ500 the other day didn't look like a GPZ500 cus it had been ratted so heavily , though when I pulled up next to him parking up he told me it was a GPZ500 , then again the signs were not obvious , and he managed to get a second disc on the front forks.

Although I suppose if it was going to be in a true ratbike ethos, you'd cobble the plastics back together with a load of cable ties. gaffa tape and small bits of aluminium plate held on with pop-rivetts.

Then matt black only the bits that look like they are going to go rusty and never wash it again.

I like naked bikes. Or is that babes? I forget. Then again we've had that poll.

Anyway. I do like the look of my XJ Divvy, but do like the power (and brakes) of the GPX. The GPX standard is butt ugly though, so I don't think I'd invest any money into making it look standard. So it has to be a streetfighter, if anything. The thing with a streetfighter is they can look wrong. I think with the standard tank and seat on this bike would look wrong. So I need some pointers in the right direction of which bike to look for to use the tank and seat from and how possible that is.

To track it would be fun I guess, and useful riding experience to have, but I'll have to look into that as I'm sure it could work out expensive. I know nothing about track days, so will have to look into it when I return from my holiday.

The tyres on this bike are quite a few years old, although they have good tread, does rubber not go off and render them useless? Will I need one piece leathers? Will I need lessons, or do you just get on the bike and go for it? Do they have novice days so we don't get in the way of those that can ride? There must be loads of questions that need answering on the subject of track days.

There is a lot to be said for giving up on cosmetics totally and just riding it. Would that £60 be better spent on making it look 'right' or on a set of progressive fork springs which will make it handle better but that noone will see?

Thank you very much Stinkwheel. Tommorrow I'm going out to get some matt back paint for a pretty pathetic looking GSX750 i've got. Seen loads of ratbikes at the TT and have always liked them.
