As I posted a couple of weeks ago I'm on my new path been self employed and opening my own shop.

Its only now its all getting very real, yes the past two weeks I've known its happening, and I've had the lovely job of sorting alarm systems, insurance, a shop fit and a number of other things which I've already forgot about while been 200 miles away from where it was all happening.

Its fair to say it gave me one heck of a stressfull weekend when I thought I may have a lot of stock sat there uninsured I tell you that for nothing.

But still, I never had anything that physically I could call mine... well that was untill this week when I walked into my shop.

https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/shop_two.jpg

Only a few more shelves to go up and a bit more stock to put out/get off the floor and I'll be able to open.

https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/shop_one.jpg

Then thats it, I'm all on my own. No more secure wage and easy four day week.
But at the same time, Im my own boss, and I get to bring games home as legitmat work. Laughing

So hopefully Wednesday afternoon my doors will open and Joe and Jenny public are welcome to come chat, peruse and buy all their games from me.

You'll find me here : Very Happy

I'll always do what I can.

Theres also a PS2 opposite the 360 (just can't see it in the pic), Just wondering when I'll be able to get the PS3 pod and also wondering just how a Nintendo Wii pod will work with the funny controllers.... Thinking

I'll save a helium balloon with CHIPS written on it just for you, and if your really lucky a chocolate coin or two as well. Laughing

It is indeed a franchise of www.chipsworld.co.uk. Its a company I've known since I was a kid as it was originally a northern company, but now has a number of stores in the UK. I'll be the 32nd store to open.

Thanks people, the well wishes help keep back the thought that if it all goes wrong I loose my house. Shocked Laughing

Looking good Hex! Good luck with it!

I'm no business person, and I'm sure you know alot more than I do. Just thought I'd mention a couple of things I've seen here in Bradford as ideas.

One store has the XBox 360 closer to the counter and the staff/owner quite often play on it when it's quiet enough. Makes them look more approachable. It also pulls people further into the shop instead of them standing near the door (Like they do in my local store in Manchester).

Do you have reasonable air conditioning or circulation? The shops here which look similar to yours get very hot and usually stink. It's the same in all of them. Nothing major I know, but it's enough to stop me hanging around in there when I'm looking for something that catches my eye (most games I buy are just impulsive rather than planned). If the GF is with me we avoid the shops completely because we know it'll be uncomfortable in there.

Out of interest, is the alarm system monitored?

Good luck mate, hope it goes well. I think we all dream of owning our own games shop when we're younger Thumbs Up Live the dream!.

Rick.

The shop at the mo seems cool enuf, but I reckon some fans will be bought at some point.
As for it ever becoming smelly... not with my reputation for cleaning. Laughing

The alarm system... hmmm how much detail to go into. Ive got it quite good as I have my own alarm system which is monitored and if it goes off I get a phone call and so do the police, and along with that the shopping centre im in has its own alarm and onsite security.
Most insurance requires me to have a minimum of a certain grade of alarm system as of course the stock I carry is high value, you think bike and car insurance is bad, you want to see what contents and liability insurance is like. Evil or Very Mad

When I was in head office last week I seen a really cool CCTV system which is accessable from the internet, really considering getting that just so if the alarm goes off in the middle of the night I can log on and see whats happened from my bed. Laughing

Laughing I'd say it's got more to do with the type of people a games shop attracts. I'm sure you know what you're doing though, just trying to think of anything that might help.
