I just started playing RTW last week & it's by far the best C&C type game i've played, you basically take over the world with armies & invade city's, there can be literally thousands of soldiers on screen at once which looks great.

It's very well done & goes into detail to get it close as possible to those days, you get new family members that grow up to be leaders & if you don't keep an eye on you're city's then there will be revolts against you by the peasants.

So any fans in here? I need some tips as i seem to attack with all my men at once which isn't realistic. Smile

Reccommend it to anyone who likes the C&C type games.

Hi
TW was pretty cool, but got a bit repetitive after a while. From what I can remember, build up your cities 1st, try not to spread yourself too thinly, and make as many ships as you can, otherwise you get pwned by massive armardas when trying to move soldiers by sea.

I,ve been regulary playing it since it came out in dec 2004 up to a few months ago, the units and faction are not completey historically correct so if you want realism try this mod which doubles the campain map all the way to india and adds new units corrects the time line (no more imperal rome).

the idea of it was very appealing to me, actually having to think about battle strategies etc like every boy dreams of thinking about, but when i played the demo (ages ago) i found that battles could be easily won by highlighting every unit you have and taking out the enemy groups 1 by 1. Ive heard its different on a higher difficulty level, might re download the demo and try it again

Are you talking about RTW? I've been doing that lately, just selecting most units on 1 enemy group. That was on normal tho, think i'll restart on hard. Smile

If you play the early romans in total war or the realism mod this is how the standard used formation used historically by the romans and it works quite well in the game, the main point is that what ever faction you play the infantry must be kept together in blocks which should be at lest 8 men deep other wise when a battle line delvops the enemy will break through and envlope you (and thats when your men run away).

Velites

Hastati

Principes
- - - - - -
Triarii
- - - - - -

Arrow keep infantry together and form a solid battle line when they engage the enemy and do not let the enemy punch through with heavy calvary/infantry or get around your sides.

Arrow aways use your calvary for flank attacks and dont let the enemy draw them away with cheap skirmish troops

Arrow always have some form of spear armed troops like the Triarii or hoplites at the rear and on the sides of your battle line incase the enemy flank you with calvary

Arrow defending is better than attacking so if your on the defence do not allow the enemy to draw you out of your postion (ie a high point or river crossing) with missle troops or horse archers etc.

Arrow elephants and are the most powerful units in the game and will break up any formation but are the easyest to kill if you have peltasts/Velites to use against them the same goes for chariots.

Arrow the most important target in any battle is the general/king if he is killed or routed from the battle his men will lose heart and most likey flee, go for him but keep your safe at the rear (kill the head of the snake and the body will die).

Rome total war is the best game l,ve ever played and has so much re-play value the battles are really impressive and l,ve never had so much fun form a pc game.

Thanks alot!

I've been looking for a guide on how to play properly with setting out you're army, so far without that realism mod i havn't been able to create an army big enough to get 8 men deep for a big war, the enemy AI usually has 3 llines deep at the most which is a bit annoying as you can just route them all by charging with the horses. Also without the mod the AI rarely attacks you, you always have to attack them first which is crap when you're ontop of a hill.

I just tried it on 'hard' mod & it's too hard, not because the AI uses good tactics but because it takes 500men to kill the general, i spent 10 mintues trying get though the gates. I'm going to play on normal mode, seems more realistic.
