Okay, I was thinking about putting a SIDI sticker on my lid but someone said once that stickers can damage the lid ?

is this just a myth or is it true ?

It is absolutely true, but, does depend on the composition of your lid. Many tri-composite lid with not be affected, the crappy cheap ones you get with a CBT probably will be damaged. I don't think it shows any physical damage but does make the lid less protective than it can be. I was told this by a police biker. Good mate of mine.

That is more likely a tri-composite then, I think it is carbon fibre, kevlar and something else, possible a plastic, so I doubt it would be affected by the adhesive on the stickers, but, wouldn't risk it.

Don't use them just to be on the safe side. Thumbs Up

You also shouldn't wear your lid in the rain because the molecules in water breakdown the plastic, and will make it melt onto your head.

Also grease in hair can break down the coposition of the inner foam.

Also body temperature can adversely affect the metal in the strap, which again, will definitely kill you if you crash.

COME ON PEOPLE, IT'S A STICKER, YOU AINT HITTING IT WITH A HAMMER!

A bit of glue on your lid will do fuck all, so go ahead.

I'm sorry to say, but, in terms of that statement...you don't know shit.

I been riding for more than 30 years and have had the misfortune to hear the news of 2 people whom have died from cracked skulls and caved in heads which could of been avoided if the helmets protective attributes hadn't been compromised by a sticker.

Obviousy their loss of life is terrible, but in regards to the sticker I can't help but think "bollocks".

I have a Roof Daytona and have a small sidi sticker at the bottom at the back next to the gold STICKER and the other STICKERS the shop puts on.

Just don't fall off and you'll be ok Wink

I can understand your reasoning and that is exactly what my mates and I said when we were told the official cause of death. He didn't even hit his head that hard and didn't look enough to mash a brain up. We were gutted and thought it was a million to one, until it happened a few years later cause by the same thing: Reduce protective helmet effectiveness by an adverse effect caused by the adhesive of a sticker. It was a sticker saying 69 and sat nicely on the back of his lid above his neck.

Forgive my ignorance...

Is it a chemical compound in the glue that weakens the shell then?

Yup. It attacks the intermolecular forces of the molecules that compose the shell and make it weak.

How does it do that through a layer of paint? (serious question)

Other adhesive may cause slight damage, but, I've never heard of a Reliant Robin rotting due to a sticker. It depends on the adhesive used for the sticker. You can buy stickers that are designed with an adhesive that doesn't cause damage to helmets or other plastics or organic based materials.

ta for that, I'll have to check on the sticker I have used, years ago we were told not to put stickers or paint our lids due to the adverse effects but I thought with modern day materials etc that warning was irrelevant........apparantly not.

Paint used on helmets isn't your usual living room paint and therefore is not chemically similar to it. The paint used for helmets is also formed in a way that it doesn't cause damage to the lid. Normal paints have chemicals that can rot plastic and cause polystierine to bubble and rott over time. So, by adding an adhesive is like using normal wall paint on your lid, in affect, adding the damage causing chemicals that were removed from the lid's special designed paint.

I have to confess, and this is through blind ignorance, that I can't see how a sticker would mash someones skull.

Even if the sticker did have corrosive attributes, surely you'd need to plaster on a few big ones before it made a difference??

Will one little sticker at the back cause the helmet to split open like a brazil nut hit at just the right point?? I'm getting seriously worried as I have a tiny sticker just above the neck at the back, that says this way up......should I take it off or is it too late...??

Years ago helmets used to come with warnings instructing not to put stickers on them or paint them because this could weaken them. I dont know about modern helmets though.I suppose it depends on what material they're made from.

The sticker my friend had (god rest him) was a white '69' and was about as big as a spread hand and therefore cause weakness over a significant area.

I shouldn't worry about a little sticker unless something gets hit on that exact spot. But, knowing bikes and falls, anything is possible and I would rather be save than sorry. Personally, I would get a new lid because if the sticker has been on a while the damage has already been done.

Mind you, I can not vouch for the composite of your lid and it may be a helmet that is resistant to adhesives, ie a kevlar based coating or something.

No I have to agree with Gaz, you have nothing to worry about putting a sticker on your lid.
Unless as above it is a sticker covering a large area it will not make any significant difference in real life situation.

OK the glue from the sticker might interact with the plastic at a molecular level, theoretically reducing it's effectiveness. If you are a helmet manufacturer or safety tester this will mean something to you. Joe bloggs shouldn't give a shit.

I imagine a sticker on the lid will put you at about as much risk as getting your haircut and compromising your heads natural cushioning properties.

I can see your point and agree with alot of it. But, if you have ever seen a helmet with the shell removed, it is a thick layer or polystierene and that will rott over time. I first clarrified this point when I use a adhesive to try and stick up lengths of ceiling scerting made of the same stuff. A day or 2 later it fell off and when I looked a it, the back were the adhesive was applied was dented caved in with lots of bubble marks and minor scortch marks.

Next time you get a package through the post, put some super glue of other adhesives onto the poltstierene and leave it for a while.

Painting of an Arai helmet is allowed (check the instructions in your manual), But before
painting remove all plastic (polycarbonate) parts. DO NOT remove any (trim) rubbers
and cover the complete inside of the helmet to avoid the agressive fumes will damage the inner part of the helmet. Self-adhesive decals ('stickers') may be used on the helmet, they don't have any influence on the material.

Can I paintbrush my Shoei helmet?
It is possible to repaint your Shoei helmet. You can use any colours which are not Nitro based. Please make sure that no aggressive fumes will enter the inside of the helmet.
You can also attach stickers to your helmet. They do not have any influence on the shell material.

From https://www.shoei-europe.com/en/faq.php

If any Shoei wearers are interested.

Hi

The helmets you could not paint were the old polycarbonate ones (usually had a seam down the middle). These were not painted and you could not paint them either as the plastic would be attacked (also not petrol proof).

GRP helmets are so cheap these days that nobody seems to by the polycarbonate ones anymore (not noticed one for sale in years).

All the best

Keith
