How easy is it to crack a wep key?

Relatively easy. Can't remember the software you need but it runs under Linux.

I have also heard a standard WEP key can be cracked very easily.

On our wireless network at home i have hidden the SSID so it is harder to do. My network would never be hacked into because of where i live but still better to be safe.

you need a wireless network sniffer like Airsnort, and some means to record and then crack the passwords out of the packets you've gathered.

On a high traffic wi-fi network, about 5 minutes of traffic can be enough, on a low traffic site, like most home networks, it can take over an hour to gather enough.

google for "wardriving" and you'll find lots of info on how to do it.

but then if you break the WEP keys too often , people tend to use MAC address blocking instead, or just go back to wires which are probably more secure.

I am using WEP and an 'allowed' wireless MAC list (which means only my laptop can log on). So even if some cheeky bugger cracks the WEP they still will not be able to log on to my router.

I should have known there would be a way. There is a way to do nearly everything.

But they would have to clone the MAC address of my laptop in order to gain access. How can they know what that MAC address is in the first place? (There probably is a way! lol)

Whilst getting round WEP is not difficult, I work on the opinion that if you are good enough to crack WEP, you can use my internet connection.

Cracking WEP is very easy indeed if you have knowledge of linux and generally know how wireless works.

I'm on my neighbours net connection at the moment, because ours is down. It can come in very handy!

Took a day or so to get enough meaningful packets though.

Tom's hardware guide has a very good guide on how to go about it. You need linux, and you need to be good with it.
