Hi all, I need a lid quickly, and so because I'm a bit skint atm its going to have to be a cheapo one. Just wandering whats the best lid up to about 60 pounds? I know its more or less been covered before, and I have searched, but I just need quick answers as to whats the best up to 60 quid from the likes of nitro, HJC etc. I need it becuase I'm doing the red bull rookies cup thing(may have seen the adverts before moto gp) so are they all racing approved?

Any help would be appreciated, will probably just go for whatever fits best but want to know if theres anything I should avoid.

Cheers,

Tom

As usual, the answer is; the best one is the one that fits you the best.
You could have a top of the range £600 helmet, but if it doesn't fit it'll probably offer worse protection than a £30 one that does fit.

Nitro are good helmets, very good quality for the price, and ACU approved. Avoit takachis like the plague, a rider crashed his blade at 30mph and his takachi exploded on contact with the road. I've had retailers tell me they've pulled takachi from the shelves due to the incident.

The nitro N800V can be found for £50.

So, how would you expect the inner foam to become damaged, yet the outer shell have no visible scars from that?

G, as weary as I am to conflict with your opinion, I was under the impression that the inner part of the helmet (the polystyrene bit) absorbs the impact. If a rider was to fall off and strike somethinglike grass with a hard bump then the 'styrene would absorb the bump and there would be an impression left in the stuff without any damage to the outer shell. If the wearer were to have a similar accident and by freak of nature hit the exact same part of the lid then the 'styrene would already be compressed and unable to absorb. Thats the way I thought it was anyway. As far as the 'lining' goes then the previous owner may have been a smelly bstard?

Any form of contact such as putting the helmet over a mirror will damage the inner foam as will things like hair spray.

Over a mirror?

And even boxed helmets in shops may have been put on by people using hair spray (you could always ask about this before you buy Smile ).

Ah, ok, (brain not working thanks to reduced sleep and a day of work, etc Smile - was thinking an in-house style mirror for some reason!)

I'd be willing to bet that most people who are worried about 2nd hand helmets do these things anyway.

Most people abuse their helmets in one way or another as you say and never realise.

I know they are poor but I wouldnt trust any test by MCN.

'The result of the BIG HELMET TEST where we tested 100 helmets is............

Biking is going to get banned and we will be prosecuted by GPS for going too fast and War of the Worlds was a documentary not a fantasy film' and so on and so forth, add more sensationalisation as required. Laughing

I've had 3 crashes and my head has smashed the road on all 3 occasions....

Lid 1. FM cheapo, still cost £100......dropped it about 40 times before I had my crash and never really looked after it but it done its job and was a good fit.........was ok till.......

Lid 2. Shoei Raid, best fitting helmet ever and after a high side at about 50-60 it rattled the deck a few times and protected me....superb....would recommend.

Lid 3. HJC helmet, great fit and very quiet for only £90, done its job when I went road-headbutting 2 weeks after buying it, biggest hit I've had on the head BUT I didn't have any lasting damage (I think!) Very good lid also...

If it fits it should do its job no matter the price.......it has to fit you right tho.. Thumbs Up

Cheers for the advice, eventually went for an HJC, cost me 100 quid, so slightly more than I wanted to pay, but fits well and I decided going a bit over budget wouldn't hurt too much considering I'll be doing track riding and may come off fairly heavily.
Will do a write-up when I get back.
