I'd love to be the knight in shinning armour but its way to far to travel even for a damsel in distress.

How about fishnets and suspenders then?

I feel safe saying that as I'm nowhere near Portsmouth Wink Very Happy

You might want to have a read beforehand - see how to shift gears on a motorcycle.

Best of luck Thumbs Up

One down Five up, just make sure you get the gear in as they can be a bit tempramental on the NSR.....

Oh and if you want it in Nuetral when you're riding then get it in as you are about to stop as some times it can and will be a Bitch to get it in at stand-still.....

Easiest way to learn how to ride a geared bike i think is buy starting with rolling of the clutch, when the bike starts to move just hold the clutch in that position until you're going along at a slow speed.

I wasn't taught this but i think it would of been easier then telling me to let the clucth & throttle out at the same time..

Just roll the bike forward or backwards a little and try again. The idea with gears is to be in the gear before the bike has come to a complete stop as already mentioned, otherwise it can lead to a lot of foot stomping.

Gears are easy.

You can change up or down when the engine revs tell you or upshift one after the other in quick sucession if in town and gently pootling along.

The important thing to bear in mind is that you have to be firm with the gear lever and make sure that you press it all the way up / dwon to fully engage the gear.

I can drive manual cars so I couldnt see a problemo with it on a bike. Dose it somehow have a signal type thing to show which gear your in? Or do you simply feel by where the gear stick (or what ever its called) is lol.
Im all for going down there to collect, gives me time to ajust and learn comming back. Just dont wanna bottle it once im there.

No gear numbers I'm afraid, so its down to the old grey matter to remember what gear you are in.

The hardest thing about gears is slow speed clutch control. Its the same as in a car, find the biting point and slowly let it out whilst balancing it with the revs.

Just practice it up and down the road a couple of times before you set off.

Just dont dump the clutch with loads of revs or you may be sorry.

That being said, you generally can 'feel' what gear you are in. Between the speed and revs you can normally work it out. Otherwise, just don't think too much about it - if you don't feel like the bike is 'pulling' enough, kick down a gear, if it still isn't, kick down again. If it's over revving kick up.
You can't change through more than one gear at once so you can't really make any massive mistakes.

The only tip I have is to really make sure you are in first before you pull away. So when you stop, keep kicking down until you can't kick down any further.

You can drive a car, you understand how gears work - you will be fine Thumbs Up

I find that its quite easy to get carried away up shifting in town and then get bolloxed when you come to a round about as you start frantically stamping on the gear lever to get the revs up to take the turn.

As Bella said, just listen to the engine.

Oh yeah, they don't like slow moving traffic, so try and keep it in second when the road allows.....

Louise, this was something i was really worried about before i went for my CBT (knowing i was doing it on a geared bike) but theres really nothing to worry about. Just make sure your clutch hand releases smoothly and slowly (don;t worry about "riding" the clutch as you would in a car, as its designed to take it). One thing i'd always advise in is to always make sure you stop in 1st (even if it means edging forward 1/2 a ft to make sure), that way you're ready to go as soon as you need to. You'll be fine chick Mr. Green
