...Of a helmet lock.

Quick release or double D helmets cannot be safely locked up to a bike with a helmet lock, can they? Can't a would-be helmet pillager simply undo the straps?

A helmet lock has a similar bolt action to a disc lock, but instead of fastening through the disc, it goes though the metal D ring and keeps the helmet with the bike and off of the floor.

Which begs, why ask the question in the 1st place?

Because if you're braindead like me, the thought of locking the D rings might not have occured to you. With quick release helmet, this option doesn't exist, and the chin section of the helmet is too large to fit through the locking bit, rendering the helmet (theoretically, to me anyway) unlockable. In the case of the quick release helmet, the only thing large enough to fit into the lock, would be the strap, which has a quick release catch..

You could buy a small cable lock, and put it round the chin piece and round some part solid on the bike ??

It does on my helmet ! Confused

There is a D next to the clip for the exact purpose of locking it to the bike.

I never use the helmet lock unless im surrounded by other bikes (usually at knockhill) and use said way of attatching it by the D-ring. However ive since bought a new Shark RSF2 Vision which uses the quick release system so im a bit miffed as to what i can do...it might fit through the opening in the male connector Thinking

I find it incredible that anyone uses a Helmet lock.

It is one bit of kit that can really save your life and people are willing to just leave them anywhere not knowing what is going to happen to them. You see scooters all the time with their helmet on the road chained to the wheel!

People don't seem to realise just how fragile a helmet is, one big knock and it's useless.

I for one always want to keep it with me to keep an eye on what's happening to it!

Aikman, do what he says. I've done this before on other bikes. A small cable lock through the rear wheel and round the chin piece and away you go.

Sometimes you can't just carry your helmet around Rob. It's only very rarely that I lock mine up but I have no reservations about doing it.

Wasn't aimed at you mate.

I find the question strange as it normally says in the care booklet with the lid as well as don't ride with the lid hanging.

Bah! I dont lock up my helmet enough to warrant buying something for it, i think ive locked it up twice in the entire time ive had the bike. And you got to remember the RX doesnt have any storage...if it did the contents would probably loose me 10mph off top end Laughing

I always worry that if someone does manage to steal my bike, they will only need a knife to get a helmet (admittedly it would be useless in an accident but to passers by they will then appear normal. An opportunist theif wouldnt have a lid otherwise, and without one he would be noticed riding down the street by everyone (including the police)

Thats alright, no offence taken.

I've had my bike mot'd yesterday and been riding for a single day now, and only have ever had one helmet - so I am totally new to biking, hence the stupid questions!

I do not ever plan to leave it locked to the bike, but at least if someday it was necessary to do do so, I would now know to lock it through the D-rings!

Thanks all.
