Couldn't you try to blag an "assessment" session for free from a local training school? They will then go through the basics with you. I did a 20 minute session at the bike show last year, having never ridden a bike before (but being a driver) and it was great. Even a short session might be useful.

I can drive manual cars so I couldnt see a problemo with it on a bike. Dose it somehow have a signal type thing to show which gear your in? Or do you simply feel by where the gear stick (or what ever its called) is lol.

the gear lever returns to the same place (as far as im aware, seems to on my nsr) so the only way you know the gear is by learning how the bike behaves in each gear .

when i first started i simply counted the gears and kept saying to myself what gear i was in, eventually i began to learn what speeds id be in what gear, what the bike would sound like etc.

be careful to give the gear lever a firm kick when going between 1st and 2nd, 2nd to 1st, on my nsr i often hit nuetral by mistake, i did that earlier whilst turning on a junction and almost dropped it, so just make sure you kick the gear firmly

and its easy i learnt it in 10 minutes, took me about 2 weeks to get fairly good at it Smile
