Newbie - with practical test question.

First - Hello to everyone, I've been looking at some of the posts on the site for a week or so and thought I'd sign up!

I'm doing DAS though not intensively, I've been taking 1 / 2 lessons a week for a few weeks now on an ER-5.

Question : Last night I got split up from my instructor in traffic and he asked me to take a left at the lights and stop. I took the left and the road was double yellows with no stopping at any time signs on the lampposts on the left but a single yellow on the right.

Bearing in mind this is a very long road I thought I'd be better off pulling in on the right and stopping rather on the left so that's what I did.
Instructor comes along the road spots me and starts giving me hell for being on the wrong side of the road. It's only a 1-way radio so at the time I couldn't point out the signs.
At the end of the lesson when we stopped I explained my reasoning but he was having none of it and said I should have waited there.

I can understand pulling over to the right hand side of the road wasn't ideal but if on my test, would stopping on the left have caused me a fail / bad mark?

He should have asked you to pull up and stop on the left where safe and possible, which is what you should do

And i would advise on not going on the other side of the road on your test.

Thanks for the reply .

I can see that what I did wasn't clever (pulling in on the right) but the other problem was that the one-way radio seemed to have reached it's maximum distance as I couldn't hear him any longer.

Just keep going until its safe. Never pull up on yellows, on a bend, too close to a junction, near or in a bus stop, on zig zags near a crossing or on someones drive.

My examiner even said to me during my test that he wanted me to pull up, but that it was a very long road, and to keep going till i was 100% sure.

And remember that they know the roads, they drive those routes over and over so they will know if you have to travel for ages before you can stop.

ps. occasionally examiners will say pull up when safe to do so, ignoring double yellows at this time, this is the only time its OK.

You're OK stopping on double yellows, though I would personally try and avoid it in all situations except when the exminer asks you to stop because he has lost you - in which case go ahead and stop on them.

Its only illegal to PARK on double yellow lines, not to STOP on them.
If an instructor asks you to stop at the side of the road (or an examiner), just stop somewhere safe on the LEFT. Its up to YOU to decide what is safe.

Yeah, i was told by my instructor to not stop on double yellows unless the examiner told me it was ok to
