If I tell my insurers that I will only be doing 1000 miles a year but do more, there is no way they can find out the mileage I actually do unless I declare it to them so could I tell them anything?

What are the pitfalls of this?

Cheers,

Karma Joe. Karma

If they found out then they could be right bar stewards and void your insurance Policy which could leave you in the crap if you were involved in a claim.

To my knowledge non of the major Insurers aks for vehicle mileage on standard policies however if your 2005 reg vehicle was involved in an accident with 20k miles on it and you had declared 1000 miles per year then you would have a hard time convincing them that they were all done before you bought the vehicle.

Basically i think its a crude and unsuccessful way of weeding out the couriers etc from general SD&P policies. I don't see a way for Insurers to make an issue of it unless they ask you for the bikes mileage at inception. The only way they could do it is check the mileage on the MOT's.

To be honest i think the mileage is a pretty big factor in the premium calculations for motorcyle policies and im sure ive exceeded what i declared Smile

yes they can. some ask what the current mileage of the bike is. even if they dont, your MOT certificates will give a good indication. especially if youve been with them for a while. better to be safe. if it is at least close they wont bother you.

they say: how many miles a year?

I say: About 10 thousand

i think i will be doing between 10-12k so this is good enough. if i said 5k and they saw i did 10k when i claimed...i could be in trouble as i have knowingly lied to them. this can be put down as fraud.

Paul

*edit: Norwich union are my new insurers through "A-Quote". They asked for the mileage at inception.

It is a big part of the policy, I changed it to 1000 miles on a Bennetts quote and the price of the premium plummeted. My insurers have my insurance as less than 2999 from when I had my 50 but they carried it over and it makes a difference, though I think I have done about 4000 so far so I'll have to keep that one quiet. Shhh!

Yeah that's a good idea.

And Paul are you sure it would be fraud as you may have underestimated your mileage at the time of ringing?

Just because your bike has done 10,000 miles in the last year when you said that you'd only be doing 1,000 miles, there's nothing to say how many of those 10,000 miles were with you riding.

I mean, when you lent your bike to robby he put a few thousand on it didn't he? Wink

IMO underestimate your milag if you want, chances are nothing will ever come of it and as long as you've not taken the piss too much it should be easy enough to explain.

Surely the only way they can check your milage off MOT's is if they get the past MOT certificates off you, I would conveniently lose mine if that happened. If you happen to have MOT'd the bike about a year before and had done more miles than you are allowed, what ste said could be applied. I doubt you'd have trouble.

You would have to do something pretty bad for the Insurance company try to find a non or incorrect declaration in your policy.

If you were the cause of a million pound motorway pileup for instance or they suspected you of being dodgy most insurance companies would try to bail and find something to void your insurance with, the mileage one is weak but they would probably try anything.

I wouldnt worry about it but i would go for a bit more than 1000 so as not to arouse supicion. As far as I am aware mileage isnt something thats reviewed on an annual babis on private motor policies, besides its all rated from systems anyway, if they dont ask for it at inception then they cant review it. My policy with NIG through H&R makes no mention of it in the documentation Thumbs Up

You can ring them and tell them you will be doing more than you estimated they may want a small payment but sometimes not if its only a small amount more
