A friend of mine on another forum is looking into organising a 1000-miles-in-24-hours challenge, possibly this year but more likely next year.

Anybody here be up to it as I am happy to pass on details?

Babyyam 1000 miles in 24 hours is not too difficult.

My friend used to works as a "body guard" for an important person in the government, (NOT in the uk).
I have been with him in their "escort" car, a merc s class with a v8 engine with bullet proof glass etc (meaning heavy) and he drove it in slightly less than 12 hours. But then the car has sirens/blues hidden in its grilles to clear the road in towns.

During escort runs they clear about 1000 miles in about 10 hours including all stops (btw the cars have extended range tanks so I think only 2 fuel stops or just 1 Rolling Eyes )

Also in town sections the police clear the road on BMW police bikes and escort them upto the outskirts, above 130 mph the BMWs peel off as the mercs start outpacing them and are a danger to the cars as in the past a BMW rider collided with a sheep and fell off into the path of the merc. He died instantly Sick

It is just so scary sitting in the front seat while they drive the car especially in smaller roads with traffic. But then all of them are professional drivers/riders and don't get sppeding tickets Mr. Green

Senna, don't believe everything you hear. Police have to abide by rules to. Escort duty is more about maintaining a speed than about high speed. There is certainly no chance that someone so important would be taken at 130mph in a heavy armoured car. Way too dangerous. Thats not to say they don't speed, but it would be no where near the norm. SEG whom escort in london maintain a minimum of 20mph (but rarely above 30) right through london.

natv4, the guy doesn't work in the UK! And you are right about speeding, but I think they don't get caught because of immunity, not that they are allowed to Wink

Most of the time according to him they drive an empty limo, something to do with security (diversion).

I have been with him a few times, and he drove like a mad man, but then the car had flags, and the number plates covered by a "number plate cover" Mr. Green

babyam

I'd possibly be interested, ive looked a the iron butt information and i have been looking into something similar myself.

The idea i have been looking into is 2000 miles in 48 hours which would be based around a john o groats-lands end-john o groats type of run. I am aware that a direct run would not encompass the mileage so obviously the route would have to be expanded some how.

I do like the idea of turning it into some sort of relay run with inbetween sections to be determined by the individuals.

Iron butt seems welcoming to people setting up there own events so it could be easily done as part of this organisation. Theres just a registration fee to pay for the Ironbutt certificate but is only 50 pounds there abouts

slept for almost 2 days afterward though. its hard on the body, especially on a tiny zx4 (im 6'4") and it wasn't easy,
