My mate has just called me up asking a question I couldnt really answer. He is dead set on buying a supermoto, and has come across a honda CRF that has been converted for road use. It is a 2003 model has lights indicators and all that jazz and is apparently mint. The bloke selling it wants £1800 which sounds quite cheap, but the bike is on a Q plate. Apparently the guy registered the bike without a document to prove it's age and as such the DVLA gave him a Q plate. Is it possible for my mate to buy this bike, and re-register it with an age related plate (03 reg)? If it is possible what would be involved? any help is much appreciated. Thumbs Up

I was reading up on this the other day. I think it can be done, but only when proof is given to the DVLA of the bike's origin and official age.

EDIT: Just copied this paragraph from here - https://www.hpicheck.com/newfrontend/glossary.jsp

Q Plate

Q Plate is a vehicle registration mark that starts with a 'Q', indicating that the vehicle was either not originally registered in the UK and proof of age was unavailable at registration; or that it is a vehicle that has been built using a significant proportion of used parts.

Kit cars usually have a Q registration. Q plates can be used to disguise stolen or 'rung' vehicles, and when it comes to a bike check, you should be especially cautious of motorcycles which bear a Q plate.

CRF supermoto, assuming a CRF450.. firstly, £1800 does seem a bit cheap, I'd be curious at that as cheap supermoto/off road could be cheap for a reason... when 4 stroke SM's blow up they cost a lot of money, trust me I know as my KTM450 blew up costing a grand to have rebuilt.

03' model CRF's are prone to engine problems anyway, can't remember exactly what the problem is but I tihnk something to do with the valves on pre-04 bikes.. 05 onwards are meant to be really good though..

Anyway, don't know about the Q plate deal but be wary of a CRF450 for that cheap...

You cannot change a Q plate!, and before he even considers it get him to ring around for insutrance. That will explain why it is cheap.

Ive said already that he needs to ring round insurance, as it might be a problem. I thought the bike sounded cheap, but the guy seems genuine, and it hasnt done too many road miles. I know that you couldnt change a Q plate that was given for a reason, but surely if the bikes age can be proven (which im not sure how to do, I was hoping someone could shed some light on this) then it should in all logical sense be able to be put onto an age related plate.? Confused

I think they possibly do now, but they didnt in 2003. The only V5 the guy has is for the Q plate.

To be honest I dont think he will do anything but sunday miles on it, so service schedule wont be a problem. About the Q plate: gayness Crying or Very sad

Think a minor service may be listed as after an hour's use or so?

Though that's under race conditions, not road use.

Definitely worth checking up what other owners do.

Yeah I wouldnt buy a bike that was that much of a chew on as my only bike. But Ive tried persuading him against the idea of a supermoto, especially one in such a high state of tune. He was looking at a VFR 400, but that got sold.
