Stop being a wimp and wash your bike, the only people that can grass you up are your neigbours and then you only get a warning letter the first time they report you.

You can't use a hose to wash your bike or car but you can fill up your swimming pool so drive the bike in to a paddling pool and your sorted.

There is a complete hose pipe ban, however there is not a ban on pressure washers, so in theory if you use one of those your OK, because the hose pipe becomes a flexible feed pipe.

If there's a hosepipe ban there are only two things you can't do with the hosepipe:

water private gardens
wash private motor cars

unfortunately, private cars are taken to include motorcycles and all other sorts of powered on-road vehicles except for HGV/PSVs. Though if you have a track or off-road bike, or declare it SORN, you'd be OK.

You can wash the drive though, with the bike sitting on it. Or the garage door, with the bike in front of it.

Here's the relevent section of the Water Industry Act 1991:

Quote:
76.
(1) If a water undertaker is of the opinion that a serious deficiency of water available for distribution by that undertaker exists or is threatened, that undertaker may, for such period as it thinks necessary, prohibit or restrict, as respects the whole or any part of its area, the use for the purpose of—

(a) watering private gardens; or
(b) washing private motor cars,

of any water supplied by that undertaker and drawn through a hosepipe or similar apparatus.

(2) A water undertaker imposing a prohibition or restriction under this section shall, before it comes into force, give public notice of it, and of the date on which it will come into force, in two or more newspapers circulating in the locality affected by the prohibition or restriction.

(3) Any person who, at a time when a prohibition or restriction under this section is in force, contravenes its provisions shall be guilty of an offence and liable, on summary conviction, to a fine not exceeding level 3 on the standard scale.

(4) Where a prohibition or restriction is imposed by a water undertaker under this section, charges made by the undertaker for the use of a hosepipe or similar apparatus shall be subject to a reasonable reduction and, in the case of a charge paid in advance, the undertaker shall make any necessary repayment or adjustment.

(5) In this section "private motor car" means any mechanically propelled vehicle intended or adapted for use on roads other than—

(a) a public service vehicle, within the meaning of the [1981 c. 14.] Public Passenger Vehicles Act 1981; or
(b) a goods vehicle within the meaning of the [1988 c. 52.] Road Traffic Act 1988,

and includes any vehicle drawn by a private motor car.

I’m with Thames water, who doesn’t specify motorcycles, but my neighbouring authority is Three Valleys and they say:

A ban means you cannot use a hosepipe to water a private garden or wash a private car . The definition of a private motor car includes any mechanical vehicle eg. Motorbikes, taxis, minicabs, caravans and trailers.

Is a hose the best way anyhow?
Most summer dirt seems to be baked on flies and such and some warm soapywater in abucket is much better - then a couple more buckets to rinse.
Unless its salty (then squirt first) that's what I do anyway.

" Can I use a short length of hosepipe to fill containers?

Yes, if to fill a container, e.g. watering can or bucket. "

put your bike, in a container (large) and wash your bike Razz

or, you could just use the damn thing, if the "boys" come round to fill you in, spray water at them.

Its a bit ridiculous isn't it, you can use a hose but only by doing it in a stupid way with buckets to make it take longer!
You could just leave it outside in the pissing rain Very Happy

no one has ever been fined for breaking a hosepipe ban so if a neighbour glares at you, just glare back

personally i prefer a brush to loosen the dirt, and then a sponge and bucket to wipe it off

if i had a hose connected i guess this would be easier tho rather than getting fresh buckets or using dirty water

I read somewhere recently that it actually depends on the type of bike you own !

If you own a motocross style bike, you must be allowed to hose it off on safety grounds apparently. Not sure where I read it though mate, or even if this helps with your old man.

I'll put my hosepipe on power jet and fire over some water from the plentiful Wessex Water area. Razz
