Probably needs an AGP card though.

I recently put an XFX 6600GT in mine (I needed an AGP card with 2xDVI output, and there weren't many around).

Seems to be a very good card - 128MB versions seem to go for about £50 on EBay although the dual DVI version is often £60. Some of the lower end 6600 cards and even 6800 cards (6800GS) go around £40.

My Geforce 6200 is AGP. So unless he needs pci-e it's perfect for him.
Pretty good card.. can do Half-life 2 max detail, at 1400 x 900.

6200 is an old card, im using the 6600GT and works pretty good but not very good when it comes to DX9, will be upgrading soon as its starting to struggle, still a good card though plays BF2, COD2, FEAR etc fine.

Well I'm running fantastic on board graphics at the moment! I need to start looking at getting a card to put in. I had a look, dribbled a bit with confusion then gave up. I'll get on Ebay later. I'm in the same boat, after an AGP. If anyone else has one going let me know

Old hat.... check out the NV7950GX2, or the ATI X1900XT... for gaming purposes, best AGP cards out there were 6800GT and X800Pro / X800 PE... I'd actually scootch around a bit harder and try and find an old Radeon 9700 Pro Rev1.3 or better (prior to rev1.3, AGP8x didn't work, they'd only run AGP4x) - beat all the cards you listed in the OP.

If TV-out is a necessity, ATI always gives better output and color depth than nV cards...

the 7800GS was the lasts AGP from nvidia as far as ive been told and they're still a few bob.

ive a radeon 9800 pro which is piss poor in CS:S so have been using a mates x800xt PE for a while now but i need to get my own card.

7800 is what ive been looking at but cant justify the price tag just to play some games....could buy a wii for that

All you need is graphs, then compare prices and see which ones offer best value for money.

For example you can get 7800 for a good price (£150 - £200) and are only slightly worse than the 7900, but you can get the 6800 for less than £100 and arnt that bad either. Also you have to take into consideration of how long it will be until you will have to upgrade again. With all these next gen consols comming out expect more and more demand from graphics cards.

If only it were that simple....

You'll need a separate graph for every game engine (CS uses different engine to Doom3, which uses a different engine to BF...)

Can't just go off one graph for one game I'm afraid fella... that just tells you which card is best for that particular game and any other games using the same rendering engine. At different resolutions, different cards take the lead in various games... same goes for levels of anisotropy and AA... turn those on and the graph results are radically different...

So, what games does the OP plan on playing, at what resolution, and will that person intend to turn on Anisotropic filtering and AntiAliasing, and if so at what level (4x, 8x, temporal...) THEN the graphs become useful. If memory serves, 6x00 series and better nV cards take the lead at resolutions above 1024x768, and the ATI starts to drop back.

Also, not forgetting PixelShader level... if the OP is using games that are programmed for PixelShader2.0, then an nV 6x00 series card or higher would be better than the equivalent ATI card that doesn't support PixelShader2.0 etc.

This is where the PC Gaming minefield comes in, and why games should be left to the consoles. The right answer for which card in a PC is the result of a bitch of an equation...

Of course, we haven't gone into what the backbone is driving this card... A 6800GT on an Athlon64x2 CPU would absolutely demolish an X800PE on an old P4 2.8Ghz CPU, despite the X800PE being the more powerful card...

I know different games use different engines, also if they are using Direct x or Open GL, but you get a rough idea, its not going to be that much different, dont be so pedantic.

I know doom runs better on ATI cards, but HL2 runs better on Nvidia, theres not /that/ much difference though, i mean look at the graph there like 2 Frames per second between some cards. You know that if you gte a 7900 you will getting a good card.
