laptop help/advice

hi all im looking at getting a new laptop or possibly a desktop in a week or two and ive got about £550-565 to spend on one. i know its not loads but i was just wandering what sort of spec i could get for that.

thats the sort of thing im looking at but ideally i would like a bigger hard drive on it.

If you're going to get anything, get a Vaio, and that's a decent price. Shop around.

If needs be, buy one like that and then buy a portable hard drive when you've got the cash. Seriously though, after spending a not inconsiderable amount of money on an Acer, I wish I'd gone for a Vaio.

That's the same laptop, a whole £8 cheaper. I got mine from eBuyer and they were pretty good.

i would prefer a desktop because of that one reaseon i can get a better spec. but im looking at going to uni in a yr so im thinking of getting a laptop so i dont have to lug around a desktop pc, screen etc. because it will be a bit of a pain in the arse to move it between uni and home when i come back.

Thanks for telling me who Lenovo were ive been looking at them on dabs.com but i was put off because i didnt have a clue who they were

For uni a laptop is absolutely perfect, it's why I bought mine. Make sure you get one with inbuilt wireless or a PCMIA slot for a wireless card.

our vehicle diagnostics are based on the Panasonic Toughbook

although it is a good little unit and offers good protection from dust and spills it does suffer with overheating, during the hot weather we had last month (long since forgotton) both our toughbooks overheated to the point of crashing and the keyboard became unbearable to touch.

We ended up standing them both in front of 18" electric room fans.


out of interest a lot of modern laptops are repackaged compal equipment (not to be confused with compaq). so worth considering if cost differnces are worth it for what may simply be a higher quality case.

I got mine not long ago, 80 gig hard drive, 1.6 celeron m, gig of ram (upgrade, i got single channel so cost more but i can uprgade it to 2 gig cheaper that way) 15 inch screen, integrated 128mb graphics, Dvd rw, Wireless net £440 delivery an all the usual dell crap.

and used a fraction of laptop one.
