Don't want to pee on your bonfire or anything but you'll find it pretty hard to learn how to speak Japanese through a CD rom or through a tape. You'll get some basic conversational phrases, but obviously the best thing to do, if you're keen, is to go to language school or do a course.

Even better go do a course in Japan, do it!! you only live once...

Theres evenng courses which help basics but there no substitute for speeking it (well trying too ).. take somebody allong who wants to learn it too.

Reading is interesting too, the picture symbols are kanji, and afaik knowing 3000 is considered literate (there are allot more, something nearer 10,000 known) the aphabets work allot different but are pretty easy to learn tbh

Worst thing imo is the politeness level, sentences are different depending on how polite your being, so you have to strike a ballance between sounding offencive or sounding like a small child talking to the queen, though i think its forgiven generally as there probably not expecting any japanese at all, but do expect to be giggled at (when they think your not looking )


I'd love to go again, its not cheap, getting there or staying, but its really an amazeing place

There may be a school near you that is a 'Language College'. My old school is classed as one and offers evening courses (really cheaply) in Japanese, Manderin, Cantonese, Russian, French, German, Italian, Spanish etc.

I think it's about 3000 to read the newspaper isn't it?? My reading is attrocious but in a slack way alot of the harder Kanji symbols have the alphabetic equivalent written in tiny writing alongside them.

And yes Japan rocks, everyone should go out there at least once in their lives...
