Right, nice simple thread, what are your top 5 greatest songs?

These may not neccisarily be your favirotes, but songs that may have inspired you, got you into a new type of music, or a song that you cant stop yourself from getting up and dancing like a looney.

I dont want any comments from people, just put your top 5 songs and the reasons.

Maybe it will lead people to new types of music they have not heard, and a chance for people to find out things about people they didnt know.

Ill get the ball rolling, remember I just want your top 5, and reasons why its so great to you.

Mine in no particular order, as deciding a top 5 was hard enough let alone trying to put them in order .

1. Perl Jam - Jeremy
I guess I just love this song, it was the song that go me into perl jam, when I first saw it on MTV. I heard it and was, wtf that is an ausome song. The lyrics the, the guitars and his voice went perfect with each other. Sometimes when you hear a song it gives you a funny feeling inside you that you cant describe, that just makes you go "this is a quality song". Listened to it hundreds of times and I still get that feeling.

2. Nirvana - Drain you
I knew I wanted a nirvana song in my top 5, i was a bit young for nirvana when they were first about, but when I discovered them (like every slightly alternative, guitar playing teenager) I was like OMG, how have I not listened to this before. I picked "Drain you" as its not one of Nirvana's main stream songs (teen spirit anyone?) its not over played, and unlike alot of nirvana's songs is more up-beat. Well the tune us but the lyrics arnt. I love songs like that, where if you dont listen to the words you get a completly different meaning to what the song is actually about.

3.Smashin Pumpkins - Today
Billy Corgan, lyrical genius? I didnt like this song at first. I never really listened to it properly, thought i was a bit fluffy. But as with all SP songs you really have to listen to every word, to get the song. The songs just fantastic, the lyrics are perfect, and it genuinely moves me when I listen to it.

4.Tenacious D - Tribute
Probably the complete other end of the spectrum, as so far as meaning in a song. Its just a laugh. Its just a fun song to listen to. Dont get me wrong it sounds ausome, I'm a great fan of Kyle Gas's subtle guitar at the beginning, building up towards the end with an exsplosion of music. I listen to it through out the whole summer in sixth form, I guess it represents that part of my life, hanging around having a laugh and playing guitar. A great song that you can stick on and just "rock" to.

5.Silverchair - Abuse me
Where it all started I guess, the song that got me listening to music. Before then I had no intrest in music, I'd only heard the crap that was on top of the pops, which didnt intrest me at all. I guy at work told me about silverchair, so I decided to give them a whirl on ye olde Napster when it was still free. Ok its not the best song ever, quite an immature song, as songs go. But it showed me the light of decent music I guess you could say. I know that seems cheesy, but im so glad that I discovered a music type that I loved. I guess it also represents another turning point in my life. Started sixth form, got my 1st job and of course my 1st bikes (NSR125 ) all at around that time. I know that when I listen to that song it will always remind me of that time when i was kind of growing up. Kind of Ironic as it was a teenage bad with a pretty immature style

Sorry I rambled on a bit longer than I had planned to, so tell me your greatest 5, inspire me to listen to different music, and tell me maybe a deeper side to yourself.

Hmmm sounds a bit cheesy but I dont know how else to put it .

5 songs is a tough one.

Since the age of 14 I’ve listened to electronic music, hard drum and bass, Jungle, Old Skool, these 'tunes' mean a lot to me as it's been with me since I heard music. I’m not going to include these, I’ll list the top ‘songs’ that have meant something.

Michael Jackson
My first stereo I ever owned was loud & old, a hand me down from my sister, the first tape I ever owned was Bad. Michael Jackson blew me away with this track and with this video. Wesley Snipes FTW. TBH I think 'Beat it' is better but Bad was the beginning of some great listening.

The Cure - Love Song
I was introduced to The Cure along time ago but was never grabbed by them before, I had only heard a couple of tracks.
One Monday morning as the sun rose up on a gorgeous British fresh day, I was getting a lift to work with Liz my current girlfriend, this tune came on and I couldn't believe how perfect it was, it’s now ‘our’ tune. A true masterpiece IMO, a shame all music isn’t this good.

Bruce ‘The Boss’ Springsteen – Dancing In The Dark
This will always remind me of my old man, it brings back memories of me and him going on site, he’s a builder and he doesn’t listen to a lot of music but I know what he likes. When ever I hear this it makes me infinitely happy for the rest of the day.

The Cranberries – Zombie
Didn’t know about adding this one, my first love used to play this a lot, I grew up with her through primary school and then into secondary school.
This reminds me of her, not really an influence to me, but a powerful tune for more than sound reasons.

Prodigy – Breathe
People loved watching me dance like an old skool loon to this.
A bit of a marmite tune today but I think like anything this good, it was over played, but back then it was the shit, nothing can match Prodigy for diversity, originality and just the way Liam puts together beats is something of a genius complexity.
They are my idols, they’ve stuck to something they are truly passionate about and it sounds like it every time.

So that’s my lot, was bloody difficult and I feel bad for leaving some tunes out.

Ok, picking 5 songs wont be easy and im guaranteed to miss some but hey, here goes:

Greenday - Nice Guys Finish Last:
This was the first song that got me into music basically. I realy liked the metal stuff my mates were listening to, but i wanted something that was different to pop, but without the swearing... so i found greenday I heard this song on a Moto-x Video and have loved it ever since, it got me into this type of music.

Spineshank - Synthetic:
Ok this is another easy choice, i cant remember where i first heard this song, but i fell in love with it. Its got everything, the heavy guitars, the typical vocals, and the lyrics make sense. The main thing is its got a realy great guitar riff all the way through it, its brilliant. Check this one out if nothing else

Rammstein - Sonne:
Brilliant tune, ive always liked rammstein for their guitars, but the womans vocals in this song realy make it stand out from the others. This was played all through my last summer at secondary school on kerrang, and not only is it a great song but it reminds me of me and my close mates all chilling on my mates sofa at lunch time, fighting over his chocolate bars whilst listening to kerrang...

Sentenced - Cross my heart and hope to die:
Bumped into this track whilst scaling radioblogclub.com at college last summer, fell in love straight away. Its got the vocals to match the strong guitar lines, that realy match perfectly, and then it has the most immense solo ive heard in a long time to finish it off Check this one out!

Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms:
Ok it was a choice between this, or "Walk Of Life". "Walk of life" was dubbed as my favourite song by my parents when i was a little nipper, i aparently realy liked it It was also classed as "our song" with my ex g/f from school. Every time i hear it, memories flood back of our time together etc and its just a great song! However, brothers in arms is the song that has to win. Its just another fantastic peice from Dire Straits that contains everything they are - the vocals, the lyrics, the riffs and solos, and just the way the whole song fits together. Fantastic This song always brings a tear to my eye when i listen to it, and with good reason...

Anyway, theres my top 5 i suppose... Looking back at them they seem about right, i could list hundreds, but then that wouldnt be a challenge would it.

Anyway, hope someone can relate to at least one of these, or has been influenced enough to check out at least one of the songs above if you've not heard them before... You never know, you might find something you like

One of the best songs of all time, a favourite that has nt changed since I was a young child. Its about a bikers crash too

Sunscreen by Buz Lurhmann
I know its a bit cheesey, but the lyrics are very clever and always make the hairs stand up on the back of my neck.

This top 5 list, is in no particular order of preference, and as I have a rather large collection of music, spanning the 50s up to today, choosing 5 favourites is not easy.
The five that I have chosen, I have done so because they all, in their own way, have helped to shaped my taste in popular music.
Yes, they are old tracks, but I'm an old bastard.

1. SOMETHIN' ELSE - Eddie Cochran (1959)
I first heard this song on an old juke box, back in the early seventies, and for some reason, it really blew me away. It opened up a whole new world of music to me. That is, 50s rock 'n' roll. Because it was before my time, (I grew up musically, in the mid 60s/70s), I had not previously had any interest in 50s music.
This record is responsible for my huge collection of music from that time.

2. PENNY LANE / STRAWBERRY FIELDS FOREVER - The Beatles (1967)
My family had emigrated to Australia in 1960, but we returned (BIG mistake on my parents part) in 1967.
This 'double A side' single introduced me to the (then) fairly new psychedelic music that was to predominate 'the summer of love'. I have accumalated a bloody HUGE collection of 60s music, and this one was one of the first singles I bought as a young teenager.

3. COPPERHEAD ROAD - Steve Earle (1988)
I first heard this playing in, of all places, a market I was strolling through. Brilliant song. Slowly builds up into a country rocker, with a good story. Got all of Steve Earle's stuff now.

4. I CAN HEAR MUSIC - The Beach Boys (1969)
This lovely song made me a big fan of the Beach Boys, and their beautiful harmonies.

5. KNOCKIN' ON HEAVEN'S DOOR - Bob Dylan (1973)
I'm not a big fan of Dylan, but this particular song IMO, is one of the most beatiful songs ever.

They don't come better then this, chilled out song with the best chorus. Don't hear it much but when it's at a club people love it.

Tears Of The Dragon - Bruce Dickinson

If I hadn't seen this song on MTV I wouldn't have bought the album. So I wouldn't have bought his other albums. So I wouldn't have bought Iron Maiden albums. So I wouldn't have joined a mailing list that turned into a discussion forum that got closed, so I wouldn't have started a replacement site, which generated some interest and ended up with me working for Maiden running their website.

If that's not good enough, without that job, I'd have had no reason to move to London. If I hadn't moved to London, there's a fair chance I would never have got into biking, since it was congestion that made me do it. And if I hadn't got a bike, I wouldn't have joined BCF and met all the excellent people I know now.

That song was like one of those sci-fi moments where in an alternate reality somewhere, I didn't hear it and thus ended up in a completely different place.


Headless Cross - Black Sabbath

Not even close to being my favourite Black Sabbath song (it's actually pretty poor), but a friend of mine had this on a compilation album that we used to listen to in computing class. I promptly went to the local record shop (150 miles away!) in search of, couldn't find, so bought the only 2 Sabbath albums they did have - utterly oblivious to the fact that 70s Sabbath and 90s Sabbath were completely different things. But it turned out I liked them both, and this would have been the start of my metal phase, as well as my 'wearing lots of black and looking like a bit of a dodgy goth' phase. Hey, I was 16! More importantly, it was the start of really getting into a certain kind of music and actively building up the back catalogue of the likes of Zeppelin and Purple.


Barrel Of A Gun - Depeche Mode

Saw them on top of the pops, liked it, within about 2 months I had most of the DM back catalogue. Which then got me into other bands I hadn't really heard of before (Kraftwerk, Einstürzende Neubauten, Nitzer Ebb) and also taught me not to dismiss 80s electonic pop as 'shite', which I had been guilty of before. I'd say this was the point where I stopped being a bit closed-minded about 'I like rock' and was more inclined to give other things a go.


I'm going to stop at three cos I can't think of any others that were as significant as those above. Plenty of 'favourites', plenty of 'songs I really like and mean something to me' but hard to choose only a couple from that pile.

Love is Like Oxygen - The Sweet
The song that made me realise that there might be more to music than what they played on Top Of The Pops, and that I might like it!

Life In the Fast Lane - The Eagles
Heard this on the radio, loved it immediately. Possibly one of the best pop-rock songs ever. Hotel California was the first "proper" album I ever bought, and I've still got it and still play it. Toss up to decide between this song and "Johnny Come Lately" but this one got it because of the guitar riff!

Always Somewhere - The Scorpions
The first time I heard this track it made me cry. It still does nearly 30 years later. I don't think any rock band has done a ballad as good as this, ever, and for some reason the lyrics just pull me every time. Takes me back to the mid-80s when most of the guys I was seeing were in bands........

Lady Strange - Def Leppard
This is "my" song. My fave band of all time, my fave album and probably my fave song of all time too. Beautifully captured Leppard at the brink of what they later became, they had left behind the youthful exuberance of the very early days and not quite evolved into the polished studio-hounds that they ended up as.

Sweetness - Jimmy Eat World
I used to hear my son playing this and never knew what it was, but I'd find myself humming it for hours afterwards. Eventually stole it off him and discovered a whole new genre of guitar-based modern music while I was at it. Yes, I am the worlds first emo grandma!

Problem now is that after listing those 5, the next 5 are jostling in my head and I need to know if I can have another go!

Here's five in no particular order...

Curtis Mayfield - 'We The People who are Darker than Blue' ('Curtis')

'...I know we've all got problems that's why I'm here to say,
Keep peace with me and I with you,
Let me love in my own way...'

Mayfield's voice at it's best mixing poignant lyrics with superb percussion. A track thats' tempo vary's with the emotion of a raw, edgy and soulful voice. For its' time the content was controversial and thought provoking - you don't get 'em like that anymore.

Errol Garner - 'Autumn Leaves' ('A Concert By the Sea')

'Jazz Pianist' the very phrase sends shudders down the spine and has people reaching for the earplugs (or shotgun!). This however is Garner at the top of his game and he mixes classical and jazz with effortless ease. No-one knows where he's gonna take us next but we're just happy to be there for the ride.

Luther Vandross - 'A House is not a Home' ('Live - Radio City Music Hall')

The Body of a Tonka Truck the voice of an Angel. If any one track personified Luther's brilliance and wide range then the performance of this song at Radio City Hall was it. Vandross captivates the fans and holds them in the palm of his hand for the duration, only letting them go when he's demonstrated the power of the most soulful voice I've ever heard live.

Esther Phillips - 'Please Release Me' ('The Country Side of Esther Phillips')

I was walking around the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville and came across an area tucked away in the far corner dedicated to 'Black Music' - I chucked on a pair of headphones chose a song title at Random and this track is what I heard. After a couple of verses my wife walked over and asked me if anything was wrong - it was then that I realised that Esther's rendition of a timeless classic had moved me to tears.

Johnny Cash - 'A Boy named Sue' ('Live at San Quentin')

Cash growls the lyrics to the inmates of San Quentin Prison with a song that's brimming with aggressive undertones only letting them off the hook with the very last line - A must hear track.

Swollen Members: Deep End

Good Canadian hip hop band with some mellow-yet very inspiring lyrics. Good for snowboarding to and thinking that you might actually be able to rap if you gave it a go.....

Nat King Cole: Unforgettble

Brilliant track that makes you think that you're smoother than Jame's bonds baby's backside. Also very good for singing in an accoustic shower and thinking you're nat king cole. Oh also good for doing cheesy smiles and staying cool when Mr Minicab slices you up at rush hour.

Drowning Pool: Bodies

Good for when Mr Minicab slices you up at rush hour. You get off you're bike headbutt you're way through his window then rip him out and beat him to death with his own leg....then drag him home behind your bike...listening to Nat King Cole

Mr Scruff: Valley of the Sausages

you're already smiling at the title, but another have a cup of tea and feel better track.

Skunk Anansie: Hedonism

Brilliant to sing along to inside your own helmet, on your own planet just before you fail to notice the red light....

Dark - much respect for listing a W.A.S.P. song

Tough call this.............................

1. Black Sabbath - Hole in the sky

Love the guitar riff. As with most Sabbath songs it's simple but kicks ass. Ozzy voice and lyrics compliment it well. The Pantera cover version also kicks ass.

2. Down - Eyes of the South

I just love the bluesy intro then it turns into a stomping, heavy as f*ck track. Phils voice melodic yet aggressive. Many try and replicate it but fail.

3. AC/DC - Down payment blues

Theres just too many AC/DC songs that are amazing. It's difficult to choose between them but I do like the lyrics to this one. A classic head banging pace as usual.

4. Iron Maiden - Phantom of the Opera

I definately preffered the Diano years. Not taking anything away from Bruce coz he still rocks but the girst two albums are definately my favourites. This track has great pace and in true Maiden style seems to go on forever.

5. Black Sabbath - Supernaut

So good I feel they deserve mentioning twice. Again, another fantastic Iommi riff.

this is a hard one really i don't really have any favourite songs but some of the more influential or songs that got me into bands are:

Smashing Pumpkings - 1979

Just a nice summery sing-a-long song but good lyrics and vocals you either love or hate, music ain't too bad too obviously maybe not the best pumpkins song but it's the one that got me into them.

Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here

Always liked Floyd before i really got into this song but it's the song everyone knows so anyway means more to be during a part of my life so it'll always stick.

U2 - Whos Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses

The song on the only U2 album i didn't have until a few months back, used to play it all the time cruising though Edinburgh and it's just brilliant to listen to up loud. One of my favourite U2 songs amongst about 15 others

Don't know about other songs but Albums that got me into other artists are and i'll keep it to 2 for simplicity.
