Who here has private treatment?
I lost out to free treatment sometime over 5 years ago. My teeth were spotless back then.
But im sitting here in agony with a toothach, no painkillers are working.
I chiped 4th tooth from back up the top 2 years ago at least and not had a problem with it.
Now the past 3-4 days its just pure pain.
Ive been told 40quid to join, check up, 2 xrays ect but then how much will it cost to do this tooth!
Have you had a tooth out? How much it cost?
Also, I need 4 of my wisdom teeth out Shocked

I need to go to one, but 40 quid!? I am not a tight git, its just money better spent else where IMO Thumbs Up

I don't have private treatment (I've been very very lucky!) but went to my dentist for a check up this morning...

My appointment was at 8.30 - the first of the day, so I foolishly hoped I would be straight in, and out ready to get to work by 9.

I got in to see him at 8.50, told him I was having problems with my wisdom teeth, that they were painful and that my other teeth were moving. He told me they were all fine, to stop grinding me teeth and if I really thought it was a problem he'd make up a gum sheild for me.

I got out at 8.55.

I paid £15.50 for the privaledge.

You might be better off private to be honest. I felt like if I wanted anything doing I needed to be a private patient.

I was told in july when i needed an appointment for a tooth that was causing me major pain i would have to wait till October!

I personally hate dentists i think there cowboys. They put temp fillings in and charge you when they should be putting real filling in as the temps fall out. They only do one tooth at a time and refuse to pull the tooth you know is rotting and causing all the pain. I had a tooth fixed 3 ties this year and its still causing pain and the dentist wont take it out. Tried getting a new dentist only there not taking new patients in anywhere here as there all full.

Tempory filling kits and iboprofan work until you get seen.

After being butchered by a string of NHS dentists, I quit going. After about 8 years I had to give in as I was in agony and couldn't sleep. A friend recommended her dentist to me - her husband is also scared shitless of dentists due to bad treatment too. I went, and the checkup showed I needed a root canal, the infection was in full bloom.

The guy was a complete professional - explained every step of what would happen, promised I wouldn't feel anything and the surgery was spotless. His assistant was pretty too Smile Anyhoo, I let him do the work at a cost of £385 (root canal plus cap). The most I felt was a mild discomfort, and I went back for another cap a few months later on another tooth.

Worth every penny.

Most places are shut now. So i rang the 0208 Emergency as it coveres Hampshire.
She said they can only give me info after hours.
I told her 3 times everywhere is shut here,
Her reply 'Ring back at 6 or ring this southampton number'
And, it was shut. Rolling Eyes

I got some some Dentek. Its ok, stoped the pain a bit but its still there.
Ive found a place that can see me in an hour.
But, its 35 quid to be seen + what ever on top.
When I enquired how much fillins could be she said 'Registered people can be charge between 40-100 quid'
So im guessing it could be aot higher.
Help please, Do I or dont I?
Its alot of bloody money Thumbs Up But, pain isnt so good Thumbs Down

Check here Louise for price comparisons from NHS to private to give you an idea of how much it could cost!

My dentist went private and the nearest NHS one i could find that would take me was about 50 miles away!! I chose to stay with my dentist and joined the Denplan scheme. So glad i did. Its costs me about £14 a month, and that includes everything (bar a few very specialist treatments!) that i need. I get a check up with clean and polish every 6 months (NHS visit used to be there less than 5 mins for a check up but it now takes about 15 mins). This may sound like an expensive check up but last year i had about 3 fillings replaced and root canal treatment, so it was deffo worth it for me Very Happy

Could be worth a thought? Mr. Green

I will deffo take a look.
I went along, did some cam checks and showed my teeth ect.
Yes the one thats chipped is chipped but in fair order.
He was going to drill part of the tooth and have a filling put in.
Then checked my wisdom teeth. One was just sick lol. He took it out, face looks like ive been punched but he reckons that is what was causing the pain.
65 quid - if the pain stops then im ok with that price.
But all teeth need cleaning/polish,2 more wisdom to come out and 2 fillings!

In all fairness i look after my teeth. He did say my toothbrush wouldnt of got to this tooth well ass it was so far back!

Dentists rates must have gone up.

If you can get it free can you not walk into any dentist? All you do is fill out a form at the end of your visit saying what benefit your on etc if you get it free. Thats the way it works here anyway.

And £30 to be seen! dentists really are rolling in it!

Hate the way they only see you for 10 mins and shuffle you out for the next visitor thats anotehr way they make their money. grrr

Last time I had a tooth out was private in Houston, Texas.

150 bucks to pull the tooth, with an option to have valium for an extra 250.

Best 250 dollars I ever spent.

People always moan about the costs of healthcare - yet you are paying a highly trained professional for his time, plus the costs of the equipment, building and ancillary staff necessary.

How much does it cost to call a plumber just to look at a leaking pipe, never mind to solder in a new bit of pipe? People are happy to pay vets a fortunte to look after the health of their animals. Of course a dentist is going to charge a reasonable amount.

The gripe about paying for health is the government has taxed us all already. Unfortunately, the government has raised the healthcare expectations of the population to very high levels yet is unwilling to pay to provide it (and it wastes vast amounts of what it does pay). I expect the population is unwilling to pay to provide it too (think of an extra 5p on income tax). Over time the NHS will become a cancer and emergency only service - there are plenty of hospitals that no longer treat routine cases of varicose veins and some that don't treat hernias.

no, you'll get seen. It's against the law to turn someone away for treatment. You'll just get a nice fat bill i the mail later.

Medical bills are the #1 reason people file for bankruptcy in this country.

I'm probably going to jinx myself here, but I've been lucky with solid teeth. My milk teeth were mush, as my mum had to have a special medication while pregnant with me so I didnt have deforemed bones. The side effect was bad milk teeth.

The only pain I ever get is a mild gum infection which with rinseing with hot salty water, mouth wash, pain killers and regular brushing goes wawya in a week or so...

I have to agree with dmahon, we take the NHS for granted. We expect everything to be completely subsidised yet seem to forget that healthcare ISN'T cheap!

To put it in perspective:
If you have a throat infection, you goto your GP and they give you a prescription, £6.60 to make you better. If you dont want to pay £6.60, they wait for your body to cure itself, takes a little longer, but it does work. Trust me, I've done it myself.

Now, on the flipside:

Crash your bike panic braking into a corner. You have serious injuries...
Roughly the following will happen:
An Ambulance will arrive with Paramedic and Technician to take you to hospital.
On arrival, a team of nurses and doctors will asses you, try to get you comfortable and also keep you alive.
If you need surgery asap, you will get it asap, pins, cages etc all done whatever the day/night.
A few nights in intensive care if needs be, team of staff on standby should the worst happen.
Moved to a ward for a few weeks to revcoer. Nurses there to assist you, 3 meals prepared daily during your stay.

When you leave, all you get a is a 'Goodybye, hope we never see you again'. No bills, no nothing... Yet!

Moral?

I'd rather pay for the little things like prescriptions, dental checkups, eye checkups etc, than have something major happen and get landed with a bill for £15,000 for 3 weeks in hospital with a broken leg! Trust me, it really can get that much, if not more. There are all the horror stories about people who travel abroad without insurance, get injured and then their parents need to re-mortgage their house to get them home. Without the NHS, we'd be exactly the same.

My Penny CoinPenny Coin.

Let the flaming begin...

I agree, however, the problem we are seeing recurring time and time again is that Dentists do not want to provide NHS funded treatment.

The service for providing dental treatment is commissioned by the local PCT and the dentists are paid in "UDAs" - Units of Dental Activity.

Their initial contracts include a bulk payment for them to provide a fixed number of UDAs. This is the fundamental problem of poor NHS Dental Treatment. My dentist will be paid by the NHS for treating me (for a grand total of 5 minutes).

who travel abroad without insurance, get injured

I stupidly traveled to the US without insurance. I should of got my son insured at the least.
We went into the Garage, only for him to drink some Ammonia thinking it was just juice (lid must of be partly broken)
I screamed, made him drink water, Police, Paramedics,Firefighters all turned up. They told me he is possibly 100% safe as babies tend to spit out anything nasty. I had the choise to go to hospital for a check, but would of cost hundreds on pounds.,
Next time I will get insurance Thumbs Up

As for the NHS. I am only moaning because I am, and sevral hundreds are intitled to free treatment. Yet we cant get it because dentist just dont want to bother with given free stuff out.
