I've worked a variety of mainly part-time jobs over the last 3 years and am probably owed somewhere in the region of £800-£1000 due to having thing's such as emergency tax etc taken. I received a letter a while ago about tax reclamation but lost it.

How do I go about reclaiming all this money the government stole from me? Bearing in mind I don't have all (many!) of the wage slips and the wages vary each month so I can't write down how much I earn't each month.

Please help! Praying

Phone your local tax/ inland Rev office and get them to look up your details.

If you're owed anything they should send it out that week. However, at the end of each tax year they generally square up with you.

The second you go into a job fill out a P46,

get off the M1 code , you should get it back via an adjustment , for short term jobs write or phone them and tell them you ceased,

the most important thing is to do it NOW , income tax is refundable if they over charge

HOWEVER
the 11% ontop (over 94£) NI is non refundable they took over £700 in NI last year wrongly and this was totally non refundable. remember NI is a highly evil regressive tax , which most people get knobbled by over since the tax office always over charges people.

Or just consider yourself a contractor and go via self assessment <10K = short tax returns = easy , and I can help you fill them out if you want.

P45 is what you get when you get sacked ,

P46 is a form you sign if you have no P45 .if you stay in your job long enough any income tax (but not NI) will be refunded to you eventually. Sometimes payroll can be pig ignorant and not do this so do it yourself! ,as said the NI is the element most people get screwed on 11% of your wages and non refundable and do not rebalance (ie if you over pay one year and underpay the next they should in theory balance)

After April 5th and its your first job in the new tax year you should not need a P45 or a P46 but the IR just assume you already had a job and put you on M1,

If you didn't burn bridges , go back to your past employer and ask for a copy we (we do payroll) keep P45s for 8 years. and are happy to send previous employees copies.

You can also call them about it and remove M1 or X off your tax code so that it is culmalative and you don't get ass raped by tax.

Just to complicate things P46Bs exist but are only car benefit in kind forms.

note do not write letters use the phone and call them regularly if you don't get a letter response in 3 days recall and keep on asking , I've known people (me too years ago) who've been owed £1000s and the IR intentionally hold onto it ask they have a bank account worth billions , billions X 10% interest rate = billions , it is in their interest to keep it as long as possible.
